tire recommendation please. "scrambler" type maybe?
« on: February 26, 2018, 03:32:28 am »
I don't really plan to go off road but the option sounds nice and I'd make this type lasts longer and after time more resembles a new set of regular tires no? I've never shopped for motorcycle tires before. Also, is it best usually to shop online? Any tips, resources, recommendations? Thanks

What size are your rims front and rear? (width and diameter) Dual purpose tires would be a choice in the correct sizes.

thanks. aren't they just like shoes in that the size doesn't matter as they should be available in your size depending on what particular tire you want?

Putting knobby tires on a street cruiser would look kind of odd don't you think? The second point is a knobby has much less rubber contacting the road not to mention vibration.

The logic that a knobby tire will turn into a street tire after you have worn the knobs off is some of the most flawed logic I have ever heard. Knobby tires have no place on a street bike, especially one ridden on the road, and will make for an ill handling bike, especially since they aren't made for bikes as heavy as ours. Tires need to match the rim width to fit properly and even then, there is a big difference between a good tire and a bad one. Tires are more important that shoes. They are similar in that shoes and tires are the only contact you have with the earth as you move about, but no one is going 70mph in their shoes down the highway. Choose tires wisely, not based on looks.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Also look at the Kenda K-761 and, if they still make them, the Avon Distanzia. Shinko has an 80/20 tire too but I can't remember the model number.

If you have the funds, check out the Heidenau K60 Scout.  Expensive but great reviews and they look great, IMO.

Charlie

those are awesome! did you pick those as they are the closest thing to "knobbies" as they're called?

uh, and please excuse my ignorance as I just read something about a "scrambler" being a street bike that could be ridden off road too. Other than that IDK diddly.

but thanks Charlie. I'll look into those. I'll have to check my tire sizes.

dunlop qualifiers
front tire "f11 3-50s19 4-p-r" What does that mean?
rear tire "k627 a  130/90-16 67"

okay that one makes a little more sense to me

so what are the rules for the size?

the front tire didn't have anything I understand but I roughly measured 100/80 width/height ratio and I guess the "19" in my above post indicates it's a 19" tire.

so the numbers on the tires suggest 19" front and 16" rear, or did I read that wrong? but check this, I measured them from top of the rim(?). help me out lol

Ok, tire size is NOT rim size. Each of your rims will have a size on it. Look for a stamp in the metal rim that might say WM2 or WM3 or 2.15x19 or 1.85x19 these are examples, if you have a 16" tire on the rear, your rim size will likely be 2.50x16 listed somewhere on that RIM not TIRE. The same with the front, 19" tire... 2.15x19 rim or similar... on the RIM.
See what each RIM states for size, then you can pick which TIRE size you need.

You need a set of "Gritty Eddies" that were on the old XL 500s in the late 70s, the ones with the giant 23 inch front wheels.

thank you. I think I'm liking the shinkos previously suggested tho. Just the right amount of "knobby" to them.

Look at Dunlop K70. Road tire with a bit of 'knobby'. They don't wear really well though. I get about 6k on a rear and 11k on a front.
