Original finish on hardware

What was the finished used on the various engine cover screws?  The hardware on my '76 750F has taken on that shiny, brown patina for the most part.  Were these screws chrome plated or just polished and sealed with a clear coat or???.  What was the finish on most of the hardware on the bike?  The fasteners on the valve cover, alternator cover and clutch don't show the marks of ever having been removed.  Someone was very carefull about it or none of the 3 POs thought ,or had need, to "open 'er up".  The odometer shows nearly 55,000 miles on it.

I think everything was CAD plated.

I think that is true except for covers that were chrome plated.  Those fasteners were chrome plated.  Headlight ring, points cover, starter cover, etc.

Thanks for that info.  One more hardware question, what type tip is used on the pan head screws on the engine covers? None of my Phillips tips fit very well. Is there a special driver?

The original screws had a JIS head, which in reality will be as near a dammit to same as Phillips. I have some JIS screwdrivers and find practically no difference between the Phillips ones.

All these + screws are JIS Japanese Industry Standard. You can get away with Phillips but not for the really stuck screws (which after sitting 20 years is pretty much all the screws on these bikes). Phillips drivers are engineered to ‘cam out’ or slip off the head. Originally made for installing the fasteners without over torquing. JIS lock in and do not cam out, making it a lot easier to remove the stuck screws. Get a good set of Vessel screw drivers and even a set for a hand impact driver. No more worries.

No. It was zinc. Except for the ones mentioned that were chrome.
