Air Compressor question
« on: February 26, 2018, 07:40:32 PM »
Greetings Members,

Just about to rent a real shop space for a few different projects, a couple of which pertain to SOHC builds.

Need to get an air compressor.  Lots of options out there so interested in what you are working with.  Would like to be able to operate a couple air tools at once, wrench, impact driver, grinder, etc.  At some point might want to try a paint sprayer.

So my question is what kind of compressor do you have in your shop?  How long have you had it.  Any issues?  What kind of tools do you use regularly.  Maintenance issues?

Also, what tools am I not thinking about that would be nice to have?  I have a pretty decent tool box but its mostly helped me work on dirt bikes, household chores, etc.  So what do you think I should have?

Look forward to your thoughts, suggestions, recommendations.

Thanks,

Kevin

For that tool list you'll need a pretty large unit. Upright maybe 30 gallons with high scfm.

Here's what I'm thinking.  Is it overkill?

I have the 60 gallon single stage kobalt brand compressor from Lowes. I've never used 2 tools at once, but it keeps up just fine with my impact, grinders, cut off wheels, and blasting cabinet. I use it a fair amount for home shop use. I've had it for 5 years with no issues. I just change the oil every now and again which is pretty simple.

I use a California Air Tools 20040CAD 20gal, 4hp single stage compressor. It was dear for a small, single stage unit. But if you are space restricted (as I am), it's a solid, quiet, and low-maintenance unit that has plenty of scfms. It does require a 240V outlet and the 20gal tank means that it is ALWAYS running during high-flow operations (blasting, painting, grinding). But it does what it says on the tin, it's quiet and it moves air. I don't hear it when blasting because of the cabinet vacuum and it's never left me waiting for sufficient pressure.

I have the similar unit from Home Depot. I have used it for tools, blasting, painting with no issues as well. It was for sure a nice step up from the 20 gallon unit I was using before!

Thanks everyone.  The space I was going to rent was rented to someone with a "cleaner" use for the space so my search continues.  If any members on the board are from San Diego and know of shop space for rent I would appreciate a heads up.

I was also thinking about renting a larger space and dividing into individual secure work areas and renting those out either short or long term.  So if any interest there PM me.
