Honda CB900fz
« on: February 28, 2018, 04:51:37 AM »
Hi, I've picked up an early cb900 fz. I'm working ginger it running for the spring.

Just wondering how early it is - registered in May 1979. Does anyone know when they first came out?

Also, paint is unoriginal. Does anyone know what the original colour options were? I' be seen an early advert / poster online, but can't now find it!

Cheers Andy

The CB900F Bol d'Or was first introduced in Europe as a 1979 model. Unfortunately, the European VIN plates did not give a production date as the North American versions, so it is up to Honda and contemporary market data. The bikes were sold in early 1979, so you certainly have one of the early ones. How early is hard to say. What are the serial numbers of frame and engine?

Nice looking bike...

From motorcyclesclassics.com:

"In March of 1979, Cycle World ran a story about the Honda CB900FZ, a 901cc bruiser that looked and rode like a faster, more powerful version of the then new DOHC Honda CB750F. “The argument against selling the CB900FZ in America is that the CBX six is the 1000cc big gun for Honda and a similar bike would fuzz its marketing,” said Cycle World. And yet, the CBX was available in Europe, where this new CB900FZ was being introduced, without worry of marketing issues, but those wanting the nine here were left waiting".

yes a lot of cbx parts.the  rearsvingarm vas a   konvensionell type..not the gpz type ,,,as i renember it..

.but think it are even better..the 78 cbx had some oldstyle frame parts...this is more modern..had thekked a red one vith the strange blue seat variant...they are preised fair low..so id you fine one in good teknic and not fzuked up..its a nice bike...they( did) use to burn some oil..like all in that periode..vho used the low friktion oil rings..think thney got the twin piston calibers in front..but are not shure abaut that..a easy upgrade if not..

the Photo .is ny freind vho had a shop in Svendborg denmark..it is closed..there is no marked for used bikes..or new..denmark is so a small marked

The first generation, like the blue one in Stev-o's picture, did not have dual piston calipers. They also had 35mm fork tubes, which went to 37mm and then eventually to 39mm.
