Topic: CX550 Deluxe tank on CB750

Hey folks,

Has anyone ever put a CX500 Deluxe tank like the one attached and put it on the frame of a CB? Any tips on installation or how difficult it would be?

Haven't done it, but as a '78 CX500 owner, I must say that that particular CX tank is one of the best looking tanks ever made.

I've had both bikes and was thinking about the same mod.  if you are making a cafe racer, this tank would be great because it already has the knee indentations.  I attached a photo of one with the tank.  I think the only mod you have to do is figure how to get the front of the tank to latch onto on the frame.  Anyways good luck!

If I got a tank like this, would a petcock with two ports like the one on my cb fit this? I think on these they come with one outlet port on their petcock

Well, the CX500 and CX650 were both twins, so they would have used either a single petcock with a 'Y' fitting, or they already have dual petcocks, one on each side, OR they have a dual feed, single petcock like the CB500T did. I like the CB500T tank, and am using one on my RD350 race bike, its a good looking tank for a cafe racer too.

yes think the 500t tank is even better then a cx...dont think you can fill up a cx tank to more then 70%..the vhale form and cap make the cap sit deeper then the top of the tank..and you can not fill more inn,, then the cap height

Yeah that's a '78 tank.  Pretty sure the CX was offered in a Custom starting in '79, with the cruiser teardrop tank (which is also one of the coolest teardrop tanks) and then they started offering a sort of throwback CX model that looked very similar to the original Standard CX500 that they called the Deluxe.

Pat has a few CX500 tanks, i'll look upstairs tomorrow and take a few pics. Also the CB500T ones, they look good on cruisers. I think it was John Kott who has also used GS650 Suzuki tanks on his custom CB750 builds... and there might be a few of them up there too.

Not sure, but if not, do what they always did before, and get a Tee or Y fitting off the petcock.
