Suzuki GS based dragbike project.
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:48:19 PM »
Bought a bare aftermarket, old style Pro mod chassis at the last Man Cup race. The thought is to build a 4.60 index class bike. This class is currently the quickest index class and its been growing by leaps and bounds since it's inception. Numerous drag racing series have added this class to their roster so finding a race east of the Mississippi won't be a problem.

This is going to be a year long project as I collect parts to make the chassis into a roller. I recently scored a nice 10" wide Kosman rear wheel. I already have a nice front wheel for it but need a nice, lightweight front end. Once I determine the actual wheelbase of the roller, I'll get my local guy to build a set of chrome moly wheelie bars. I'll be on the lookout for a used fiberglass Hayabusa style body.

I've got on hand a 1570cc engine but have to buy a full 5 speed auto transmission to complete the engine package. I'll piece together a nitrous oxide system for it as I'm buying the other parts.

If all goes as planned, I'll have it ready by the end of this season.

The hub is oriented correctly. It has a 6 hole sprocket set up. The other side has 4 holes for the rotor.  I'll probably run a 10.5" tire on this one.

Wow, I thought my KZ with a GS swing arm was cool.  I'm seeing a lot of reasonable priced dragbike parts on facebook sites.

Ummm, i'll probably limit myself to 3 bikes and 4 classes. Lol. I suppose a person could surmise that I need to check into motorcycle racing rehab for this crazy obsession. I'd guess I wouldn't get lonely in there either- hahaha. Lots of addicts hanging around this forum.

There will be times when only this bike will be raced at an event, depending on the classes contested. I'm just trying to satisfy my need for speed before I get sidelined by life. At 57 years of age, its now or never.

I'll post as I move this one forward. Have another bike to build before this one.

Yes, I've been watching them daily to see if I can snag a good deal on a front end. Missed a few. Others were almost as expensive as a new one. I may end up going that route in the end. I just hate to spend $1200 on a new front end. This will probably be the last dragbike I build in my lifetime so I might slurg. Lol

Haven't posted on this topic in a while because I temporarily lost interest due to an active racing season. Scored a set of billet triple triple trees recently so I wanted to start back on mocking this Chassis up again. The trees came with a set of stock GS forks. They're to long for my project but will work fine to determine exactly what length fork I will need to get the proper ride height. Hopefully I can lower these internally to save some $$ for now. Next step is to get some spacers made for the front wheel and buy a front, and a rear slick so I can make this thing into a real rolling Chassis.  Right now I've  measured the wheelbase at  74". I'd prefer to be no less than 78" so I  may have to source some longer axle blocks.  One step at a time.

Cases and cranks are getting harder to source. Look out for me if you cross paths with any GS engines or cranks. 11500 or 1100 stuff. I've got on hand a 1570 engine that needs a  transmission and complete freshen up. I'm on the look out for a 5 speed fully auto big shaft transmission now.

I've noticed the same problem with cranks and cases. One solution for me would be to buy some cheap EF's from Sweden.

It's hard to find complete bikes here for a reasonable price to use as a source for the engine. People are beginning to realize they can ask, and basically get their price for the engines, cases and cranks. A set of bare, virgin  cases brings $600 easily here. I actually gave 4 engines myself that I've stock piled although I'm not actively racing a Suzuki. I knew one day I might  build one and also figured it would be a good way to make some extra $$ in case I needed to generate some fast cash. This bike i'm building now will use up one of those sets. Hopefully I won't blow up anytime to need the spares :-\. I'm putting this together to run the 4.60 index class so it'll have a dose of nitrous onboard. If tuned correctly, the added horsepower shouldn't be a problem.

Haven't posted in a while. I've made a little progress.  We now have a roller. I used the front fairing from another chassis I had on hand. The body came from a local racer. Its to short for this wheelbase so I slid it backwards on the frame. Should work out okay once I get the mounting tabs welded on and do some fiberglass work. Its a lot heavier than I prefer but its cheap so I'm moving ahead anyway. Bought tires to mount on the wheels. Loks like I intended up with my 78" wheelbase after swapping in some longer axle blocks. Crank to axle length is about right at 50". Next I'll get a set of wheelie bars built, work on a front brake caliper set up and buy two master cylinders for the handle bars- I'm using a slider clutch. I'll start engine building later in the year. If all goes well, I'll be racing this bike in the 4.60 index class at the final Cup race in November.
