Just....disappeared
« on: March 02, 2018, 03:53:42 AM »
I find it fascinating that anyone can simply disappear in today's world/society. Be it from foul play or by choice. Everything is so connected and traceable. And to be able to walk away from the "fingerprints" left by electronic devices, be it banking, a phone, social media, your favorite internet search/hobby, etc.
And modern forensics and detective work....would Jack the Ripper have had a chance today?

I love the television show "Disappeared", mostly because most episodes leave you hanging. And the recent disappearance of the CDC doctor is what started me thinking about it today:

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/missing-cdc-employee-last-fall-said-trying-help-232258916--abc-news-topstories.html

I'd say you'd have to be damn good or damn lucky to be a criminal and make someone disappear. And you'd have to have some amazing discipline to do it yourself. I just find it fascinating in a slightly morbid way.

But to even sever the leash, there's (usually) a record of bank withdrawals to fund the disappearance, search engine results to figure out where to go (or....how to off yourself), even things like OnStar in the vehicle you take or an Uber or taxi company record, even if it's just a driver remembering your face.

Borderline impossible these days.

The Marshalls hunt down people all over the world that try to do so. Too much technology.

I was watching the "Marshall Law Texas" show, and at the start of each episode they say that there are 30,000 fugitives in Dallas alone, so I guess if that's about the average, there are hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of fugitives in the US, so unless you've done something really really bad, if you just decided to disappear, the authorities would be too busy chasing other fugitives, to worry about you? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Pretty much. Miss a court date in another state for a traffic ticket? You're now a fugitive. They likely know exactly where you are. It's just not worth the money to extradite you over something small.

My brother pulls people over all the time with warrants from out of state. They call the police in that city, ask if they want them to bring them in and hold them for them. 99.9% of the time, they say no. Has to be something big, most of the time. Technically fugitives, though.

You would live like an illegal alien and there are at least a million of them.  You would need to slowly build an alternative life. After 9/11 it became harder to get a Social Security card.  Once you score that, you can work your way into becoming a new person.

Ha ha, I heard on the radio that in Argentina a male needs to be 65 before he can stop working and receive the government old age pension, but a female can get it at age 60. (it used to be the same here, but now its the same age for both) So nowadays with "Gender Fluidity" and such, 60 year old Argentinian men are legally changing their names from "Roberto" to "Roberta", putting on a dress and turning up at the welfare office to collect their pensions.............. ;D
