I replaced the fuel pump control module on my 2013 Lincoln MKT. Tuesday it just died on me pulling away from a stop. Fortunately I was able to coast to a legal parking spot. I thought I was going to have the major pain in the ass fuel pump replacement, but as always the internet was my friend and I found a YouTube video about fixing the problem by replacing the fuel pump module, a 30 minute job installing a $57 part, rather than the in-tank fuel pump, an all day job installing a $200 part.

Since I didn't find an MKT specific vid (the one I mentioned was on the Ford Flex, same platform and part, but slightly different location) I made my own video and put it up on my YouTube channel.

I cant tell if I'm a big baby...or if this truly is a PITA thing to do.

The 73 Firebird is getting all new suspension and steering.  So I decided that I should go ahead and rebuild the control arms with all new Poly bushings and new upper/lower ball joints while I'm waiting for the new steering parts to arrive.  I'm telling you....it was AWEFUL pressing out the old stuff and getting all the new installed on the original control arms.   If I went back in time I'd seriously consider just upgrading them with new tubular control arms.

I even painted them all nice...and then proceeded to wack the crap out of them when installing ball joints, bushings, etc...I still need to paint the steering knuckle/spindles so I'll touch up the arms then.  Even once done It was a bear reinstalling the lower control arms in the frame...not sure if the frame mounts were a bit bent or what...but it sucked.

Do you have a press? I picked up a Harbor Freight hydraulic press a few years ago and it has been one of the best tool investments I have made. I have replaced multiple bushings and wheel bearings that would have been a nightmare to get out if all I had was a vice and hand tools.

+1 to a press. I bought (on sale) a bench top unit a few years ago. Best investment I ever made.

Now if you want to talk about fun have the bolt that goes through the chassis /front cross member be rusted inside the cross member and the fact it is a long big bolt that goes from the outside of the control arm on one side to the other side you have to drive the rusty fastener out of the control arms and cross member. You destroy the old bolt getting it out and then you are faced with either having a machine shop or knowledgeable and resourceful friend make you a new bolt or you have to find a good bolt out of another vehicle from a salvage yard /parts car because you cannot order another as it was never offered for sale.

Be careful pressing bushings in because you can tweak a control arm if you cannot do each side flipping the control arm about to do each side one at a time. Support the arm if you are having the press a bushing in with both sides between the anvil and the arbor so you do not pinch the arm inward as you press in the new bushings.

New rotors and pads all around, a new air filter and a new cabin air filter. The engine filter may have been the dirtiest filter I have ever removed from one of my cars.

Good lord man!  :o  Thats nuts

I bought the car just over a year ago and I thought the oil and engine air filter were new at that time (oil definitely was). I also could have sworn I checked it at one point, which I typically do on new to me cars.

I had the oil changed last week and they mentioned that the air filter was dirty, but didn't show it to me. I knew I was doing the brakes this week so told them I would take care of it. Had they actually shown me the filter I would have had them change it right then.

i have the spacers that prevent the crushing in of the opposed eyes,i clean with turps the openings then use hard setting compound as a lube, its all too easy with correct tools and jigs, belting them in with a hammer is ape #$%*!

Yeah...I made some spacers to keep the crushing from happening.  I'm sure I made it all harder on myself.  I have a ball joint press (big c-clamp thing)....I think I was fighting with some of the cups not being the ideal diameter to fit over the bushing but catch the housing.

regardless...its done.  And I better not have to do it again for a while :)

That sounds like great fun! I've been thinking of something like that for a long time, but I never seem to finish the projects I have.

After spending way more time and money than I could afford trying to fix the overheating issues of my GMC 6.5LITRE TD. I finally managed to fix the problem by locking up the new supposedly HD fan clutch. It took thirty minutes and zero dollars. I'm not sure if I'm pleased or I should have posted this in the " pissed off thread".

Yep the fan and hub are for the later higher reving Duramax. The hub was designed to run at 90% max engagement. My old girl redlines at 3'500rpm so drama there.

Torqued, greased, and finished steering linkage, and steering box.  New brakes and wheel bearings.

Installed EBC Rotors and wilwood dual pot calipers.

Just need to bleed the system.

New sway bar will be here Monday and then I can just about wrap up front end and move back to replace the leaf springs.

good idea dave...as soon as I mount the wheels I need to do a rough alignment.   I couldn't match the tie rod length exactly because I switched up to a 1975 and later style steering linkage setup. My original center link was super worn and they are VERY expensive to get rebuilt and the tie-rod dimensions between 2 styles aren't identical.

I'm REALLY hoping that the front tire clearance is good on these hotchkis springs....I dread having to take apart again to install spacers.

Cheers, Joe
