Just cause we're paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get us! L0L!  Around here, we would put a 5.3LS V8 in it. Then break the rear end and replace that too.
There is something to be said for a stock reliable vehicle that rarely breaks down.

First we break the transmission then we break the rear end. 8) At least in America we can install non stock parts without having to get an engineers approval certificate for big money to do it. None of the motor vehicles that I own are stock. I would get in big trouble if I lived in a different country. ;D

i bought another can of that wrinkle paint and managed to get the rocker covers done, sort makes the front of the motor lacking now?i have a few weeks off work shortly and have a new timing cover to fit so itll all be good then,it weeps oil and water ever so slightly from the timing cover, its corroded inside where it bears against the block water passages, not bad for still the original unit from 1973!

I love the look of wrinkle paint. I always assumed it was the lucky result of accidentally mismatched paint compounds.

Went up to O'Reilly's after Lowe's on my way home from work this morning. Yeah, that's a expensive morning. Order the starter bolts for my 6.5 Chevy 3500. Of course they wouldn't have two bolts in stock so I have to wait till tomorrow morning to get them which means I won't really be able to put it in till the weekend because I'm getting all four of my wisdom teeth cut out in the morning.

I serviced the four link rear suspension on the dragster. Two of the bolts and nuts were stripped out, would not spin off. The bolts are apparently too long and the nylock nuts were threaded on until they went over the shank. I got a pair of new NAS bolts, nuts and 4 washers. $40 at my local race car shop.

I also sent the NHRA chassis inspector a text, about doing the inspection and a fresh tag. He will call after he checks his calendar. If he can do a couple in the area, he'll come to the car. The good news is the seat belts are good until 12/2022 so they are set until next year. I think the last re-cert date went long so that helps.

Rebuilt the carb and either replaced or cleaned every bolt in it.
Wish I would have bought some soda media to blast the bodily but it came out good regardless.

It's cool that you are still running the 305 V6, not many of those around anymore.

Re: What did you do to your non-motorcycle vehicle today?
« Reply #1824 on: May 13, 2022, 07:34:16 pm »
paranoid americans !    if the test in australia is anything like ours you have to rev the engine pretty hard . honestly repairing terrys old truck engine is not the sort of work garages want . the money is in brakes , shocks and servicing .
thats my defence of australian mechanics !

Geez I'd forgotten about this discussion and just came back to it today. The good news is that the truck is fine, but like most "mechanics" that I've come across, this guy had no idea what he was talking about, so I took it home and fixed it myself. It turns out it was a bad injector, allowing fuel to continually flow into one cylinder (I replaced all 4 injectors so don't know which one) which caused all of that white smoke. I'd never heard of it before, but 5 minutes on YouTube solved the issue.

I'm just in the process of getting the other Roadworthy fails fixed (replacing a sealed beam headlight with a blown low beam, getting the brake discs skimmed plus new pads and fluid, and replacing the drivers seatbelt) before I take it back to him to tick off and give me the certificate. Anyway, crisis averted, I probably only needed to replace one injector ($90 each) but it's 25 years old, so I gave it a birthday. I still need to source 4 original wheels and tyres for it, I might have to get some trucked down from Sydney as there aren't any available locally, which is a pain in the arse. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
