Today the new slave cylinder for the MGB/GT arrived. Because of the way the last one failed I took the new one apart and I'm glad I did. There was a bunch of grey pastey grit in it, you can see it on the rag. After I cleaned it up I had to smooth out the front edge of the piston because it was very sharp. Once I got the piston deburred and clean I lubed the seal with red brake grease and the side in front of the seal with SylGlide. I'll be filling up the system from the slave cylinder bleeder valve to get the air out of the high point in the hard line when my buddy gets here.

Kelly.....just have to ask. What’s in a can of “Cougar Gold”?

It's really good cheese made at Washington State University. My friend Paul that I build bikes with went to school there and buys it all the time plus the cans are really handy.

That cheese looks good.

Yesterday we finished up the 72' MGB/GT. It took a couple of tries to get the air out of the clutch hydraulic system. I put the wheels back on with new tires so the boy and I took it out on the 12 mile test loop and everything is good. Last night the wife and I took it out to get dinner. 8)

Sharp looking MG B GT... Glad you have it running again and can enjoy it. Should take a road trip with the wife for a short getaway if you are not going to coat it in salt doing so...

I had previously replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. That slave cylinder was an inferior design. It had a weak spring, a small aluminum disc to protect the floating seal pushing on a floating piston. The piston is dished to keep the pushrod centered with a dust boot on the outside. The problem with all of the floating parts is the other end of the pushrod moves in an arc which appears to have side loaded the piston and with a lack of lube wore out the bore and ruined the seal.
The new slave cylinder has a better spring that attaches to the back of the piston and the seal is in a groove at the back of the piston. I opened up the new slave cylinder because of what happened to the last one. I think the new design is much better. I did have to radius the leading edge of the piston after I cleaned out what looked like lapping compound that I found inside the bore of the slave cylinder. I lubed the seal with red brake grease and the side of the piston with SylGlide and reassembled it with a new pushrod that was also subject to a strange wear pattern. The clutch is very smooth now.

It's only a pain if you worry about keeping it clean all the time. I used to take it to the Greenwood Car Show, the biggest one I Seattle with mud plastered down both sides of the car. It freaked people out so I would ask them if they've ever had fun in their cars on a dirt road. They look all shocked so I tell them that they are missing out because it's a blast. 8)

Al the es I had my ‘03 Grand Cherokee, I had to replace one caliper,  every one or two years. They never seized together, but after winter salt and sand, one usually tight end up. When it wouldn’t roll out of the garage in neutral (we have a good drainage pitch), I knew it was time!

These have 294 000 miles on them  ;D -  but there is rarely salt on roads in Virginia.

Did pretty stupid screw up, too.  Before changing front calipers I look at the left rear brake and left it open.  With the new caliper installed up front I decided to bleed it right away.  Yes, you guessed it, I pumped the rear brake piston as far as it would go.  Than, instead of opening the bleeder, I pulled the piston out and had really hard time getting it back into the boot.

Using my brain actually hurts, that's why I don't do it.  ;D

So it seems it seems it is "brake month" on SOHC non-motorcycle service!  I had two appointments cancel on me yesterday so I headed to our storage where my "Ol' Chevy" is ...

I removed the old, leaky Delco calipers last month and sent them to Lone Star Caliper about 4 hours north of here. They rebuild them, install stainless steel sleeves in the piston bores, new pistons with o-ring seals rather than the "lip seals" that they originally came with. The finish on them is beautiful. These come highly recommended for cars that dont get driven regularly and come with a lifetime warranty, cant beat that! Got a late start so only had time to install 1 before "quittin' time" at 5:30.  3 more to go...

Unlike most cars today yours looked like it was pretty easy to get to.

It's not too bad, the radiator has a drain on the bottom. 8 bolts for the core support and 6 bolts for the radiator. 4 bolts for the fan and 5 bolts to pull off the water pump.
It's way easier than a modern car and believe it or not but it's easier and cheaper to get parts for than any other vehicle I know of. I can get almost anything I need by the next day if I call in the order before 2pm. 8)

A couple of days late, this was Sunday when I did a 400 mile road trip to swap my K2 bitsa for 2 Kawasaki Mach III 500's. The little truck went like a rocket, and as I passed countless SUV's, BMW's, Mercedes, and even a couple of Teslas, I wondered why folks spent $100K (+) on cars that they can't by law drive any faster than my old truck....... ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Maybe that's how it is in Oz, but around here, if you go the speed limit, you nearly get run off the road!
The speed limit on the tollway near the Austin airport is 85mph, the highest in the nation.
The biggest concern is hitting a wild hog at that speed!
