Where to get CB550 cylinders bored in Central Florida
« on: March 08, 2018, 08:46:30 AM »
Hey, one of my many projects is a 76' CB550 and I'm looking to bore out the cylinders to fit the cruizinimage big bore kit. Does anyone know a machine shop local to the Central Florida area? Ive called a half dozen machine shops in my town and no one does any boring of that size.

If I can't find one local, who do you suggest I have the cylinders mailed to? Assuming they are capable of receiving them, boring them out, and then return shipping the cylinders back to me.

Quote from Hurco550 on the DTT forum:

MototechUSA is a shop in Mansfield ohio. One man operation, but he has been doing powersport engine machine work for years, and his prices are still outta the 80's. His name is Chris and his phone # is 1 419 512 3588. Leave a message if he doesn't answer. He is still old school and doesn't have a website.

I asked the same question over there, and got the above response.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

I had the same issue. Shipping is about the only option. I had a lead on a guy in Gainesville, but I figured if I was going to drive that far I might as well ship them. Calj was a huge help with one set of cylinders I had bored  8). There is a guy here in Orlando that does outstanding work, but at $100 per hole it was cheaper to ship elsewhere and I would have enough left over to cover the cost of the (cheap) pistons! It's a shame too, machine work almost seems to be a dying art. I grew up in northwestern Ohio and you could just about throw a rock in any direction and hit a machine shop. Not so much anymore, especially down here.  :(

Thanks everyone for the replies. I was afraid the answer would be as Wilbur says. Cal has selflessly offered to help me out again, so a big shout-out/thank-you to him.

On a different note: my father and I just went and checked out this auction: http://www.jwoodandcompany.com,  happening here in Central Florida. They have about 70 bikes that are in good condition and about 1700 bikes that aren't worth the time/money to restore. It was quite an interesting and depressing morning.

Looks like it was an interesting auction! Did you find any Hondas? How were the prices?
I was ta the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club show in Eustis Florida yesterday.
They had more bikes showing than last year. I aws impressed with how many of the big 6 cylinder bikes were om display!
They was also a swap meet on site and there were quite a few bikes for sale;all makes and models.
Prices were fair to crazy money!
I want to die like my grandfather did...in his sleep and not screaming like the passengers in his car!
