I think i did something really wrong when cleaning my bike
« on: March 11, 2018, 07:58:12 AM »
Hi all

Yesterday had a gas leak from petcock, bike is a 750 k2, decided to clean the bike to remove gas smell: i threw some water on engine bottom case. This morning i tried to fire the bike, engine was cranking continiously without firing. Tried around 20 times. Now engine does not crank anymore, instead i can hear the starter spinning without anything with a sound like a "zzzzzz". Kick start is not cranking the engine neither. How bad is that ?

enough gas in the tank?  petcock on?  try reserve.  is the engine kill switch on or off?  battery dead?  wet wires?

i can't see how "threw some water on engine bottom case" can cause an issue.  it has to be something else.  or did you hose the entire bike down?

Yesterday i removed my carbs to adjust my idle, because my carbs settings were not correct. I adjusted the carbs with the flash light method, put my carbs bike and tested, all good!! Then had this small leak that caused me cleaning the bike. Do not understand as well what is going on

Take the points cover off and see if water got on the points. wetness in there isn't uncommon after
dousing water in that area.

Checked that as well before posting and no, there is no water in there. I put some baking soda on the leaked gas to absorb it before throwing water. Maybe excess baking soda got in the engine ? Yesterday was windy. But would baking soda prevent an engine from cranking !!

Little confused on the 'Z' sound but your battery may need to be recharged. A quick way to tell if your getting spark is to either pull a spark plug or take an extra one and ground it to the engine by laying it on metal and turn the engine over looking for a spark.

Here is the sound

It might be the blue and yellow wires coming from the field coil that had water in them..they should cnnect with the blue and yellow of ignition points. I sprayed wd 40 in the connections but i still have this sound

Your starter clutch is not engaging is that problem. Should not be related to the water. The bike kicks over OK though ?

You might have leaked gas into the cylinder causing it to lock up, that would explain why the kickstart doesn't turn it over. Then you would have to check your starter clutch, behind the dyno cover to see if the bolts are sheared off. You did say you had a gas leak right??

I had gas leaking from faulty petcock

How to check the bolts ?

I understand now that cleaning my bike is not at all a related issue

The starter clutch is bolted to the back of your rotor with three fasteners, those could be loose or broken or the rollers in the starter clutch could have flat spots on them. Either way to check those you would have to remove the dyno cover and have a look in there. The starter clutch gear also has a machined surface on it which could also have some flat spots on it.The rotor would have to be removed to see any of that.

I would also take the starter cavity cover off and check for water....does sound like a weak battery.
If you take the plugs out and kick it does it turn over?

Start by charging the battery back up while you're doing the other search. The chatter noise indicates the starter does not have enough power, so the start solenoid clicks in-out-in-out rapidly.

Did you check your RUN-OFF switch on the handlebars? I once fought with my 750 (or it might have been my 500) when it got bumped to just-barely-OFF once, spent half an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't start! (This was in 1973, still bugs me...).

If you took the carbs off, you may need to check your fuel line routes, make sure they are not kinked. Make sure fuel flows OK thru the petcock, too. Open the float bowl drain screws and let some fuel fun from the tank thru the whole system, every carb, then close them back up.

Make sure the clamps on the carb hoses are tight, on both ends of every one.

I ve checked that fuel was running, opened randomly carb float 1 and 4, that had fuel in them, then let fuel run to check if it is not a fuel related issue. Just to add something i've tested the bike after rebuilding carbs by running engine and checking idle. It was all good. Between, this weird sound is getting louder :) battery is also at 13volts

It takes very little water inside the points cover to rob away what little power even a strong battery has to give.  I’ve had times where  condensation in there rendered points too contaminated to fire my Hondaman coil amplifier.  My fix was to disconnect the Hondaman module and run the points with full current.  A coupla cranks and the points dried out.  Reconnected the module and was good as gold.

Dirty points make the situation worse.  When was the last time you filed your points faces?

Time to delve into the starter clutch methinks.

is there a way to troubleshoot ? until now i don't know if it is either my starter clutch or my starting motor. Which one is faulty ?

I would suspect the clutch since you are getting a noise. If it was the motor you would get a single click at best.

How can i repair it ? I think that the sound i hear is the starter motor spinning, but it is making the engine cranking. I tried to remove the stator cover and guess what, i problem never comes alone, one of the screws is broken. Anyways, removed all screws expect this one but the stator cover does not move, seems to be glued :)! should i hammer it to get it over ?

make sure all the screws are out.  some taps with a rubber mallet wouldn't hurt.  taps.
