KZ drag bike engine build
« on: March 12, 2018, 12:07:48 AM »
I've been dragging this one out due to a sciatica issue. Just wanted to post a little KZ big block engine porn. Hope to drop the head on tomorrow night and maybe install, and degree the Cammotion .465/.485 lift cams.

 What head are you using?

That's my shop helper. He got restless so I had to close up the shop and take him home. I'll be putting him back to work this weekend. Lol

Give me $1500 and it'll just cover the basic machine work by Paul Gast. Doesn't touch the parts etc....

I'd still like to build a kz/J hybrid engine but That would absorb the race car / firebird funds in a hurry and I'm not sure I'm brave enough to race one anyway. I did work on the firebird last week for the first time in a while.

Moving ahead. I was able to motivate myself this evening to do some work on the dragbike engine. I put sealer under the block and pushed it onto the top case. I also put sealer on both sides of the copper head gasket and dropped the cylinder head on top of the block. I got the head torqued to specs and decided to stop at this point. Tomorrow evening I intend to drop both cams in and then degree them in. Theoretically, I shouldn't have to move  the cams around on the adjustable sprockets to get my preferred lobe center since I didn't do any major changes to the parts, or geometry of the top end. 110/110 LC works well for this engine and the type racing I typically do with this bike. Its best to take the time now to verify the numbers while the engine is out on the table and not in the frame.

I added a 1-2 auto, 5 speed KZ transmission to the engine this time around to help lower my ET. I'm shooting for low to mid 5.50's in the 1/8th mile and 8.80's-90's in the 1/4 mile.  I may have to play with the sprocket gearing to net those projected numbers. We'll see.

I'm here to tell you 8.90 is flying.  I've been in the sevens in a car at 170 but my driver doesn't like watching me drive.

The engine will go back into this bike when I'm finished. Its my wife's old bike. Its been parked since I built a new car tire bike for her. That one has a 1500cc engine in it using a ported, big valve GPZ head and a 1-2-3 auto, 5 speed transmission.

Here's a picture of the wife's new bike. She let me borrow it for a bracket race that day. We went on to win the race.

I'm feeling a good bit of relief Jerry. I'm not 100% yet so i'm not doin a lot. This engine was on the bench in pieces before the sciatica pain started. Its not so bad working on it because I stand up most of the time. When I feel the need to sit down, I have a stool right by me and work seated. I'm still not quite to the point of feeling good enough to begin assembling the project F model bike yet. It certainly will not be ready for the Cup race. I do plan to race the KZ in super comp once I get this engine ready and feel well enough to make a few test passes prior to the event. My top gas bike launches a lot harder so i'll probably park it this season to ease the stress on my back.

Started life as a stock KZ 1000 chassis that was raked and then added a car tire conversion  back half with wheelie bars. It has a 10" wide rear slick. Its got a one piece ZX9 fiberglass body with a ZX11 full front fairing. Of course that's all aftermarket body work. I built the engine from scratch. I used 79' KZ1000, Mk2 cases because they are stronger than regular 900or 1000 cases. I had my local machinist build a 1-2-3 automatic , 5 speed GPZ transmission. I installed an MTC slider clutch. For the top end, its got 85mm, 45 degree domed pistons to match the 83' GPZ 1100 big valve head. The head was poeted locally with 40mm intake and 33mm exhaust valves - all stainless. The carbs are 40mm Lectrons. I did install a nitrous oxide system on the bike but its never been sprayed so I'm not positive what it'll run on laughing gas. I'd speculate 7.90-8.0's in the quarter mile. I doubt the wife will ever ride it with the nitrous turned on. Maybe one day I'll sneak a full bottle in there and check it myself.

Had several  distractions this evening but I finally got the cams installed in the engine. I started setting up to find top dead center and installed the degree wheel. I decided to quit tonight and pick up again tomorrow afternoon. I didn't like the home-made piston stop I was using so I'll make another and resume the process.

Only had to move the exhaust cam a tad. It was sitting at 112 and I wanted it at 110lc. The intake was just perfect and where it set it the last time I freshened up this engine.

Hope to start installing it Sunday afternoon.
