Stripped a screw, need a replacement
« on: March 16, 2018, 08:26:51 AM »
I just learned that I'm not an exception to the rule and that I do, in fact, need to get myself some JIS screwdriver heads. Unforunately, I learned this at the expense of one particular screw (bolt?) on the timing assembly of my 78 CB750F. I managed to get it out, but the head is stripped pretty good and I'd like to replace it. Problem is, I have no idea where to find it. My usual websites are turning up nothing. Any reccomendations? This pic shows which screw I'm talking about;

Probably have one at Pat's shop, will see if I can get one out of an old points plate.

Lowe's or Home Depot should have them in their special fastener drawers.  If not you can order some from the Nutty Company (yea, it's their real name)  The screw you want is probably 2.5mm or 3 mm.

Is it really that important to have the original type screw on a 1978 750F? Will the value of the bike be so much less if you use an Allen, Torx or Phillips head screw. Which would solve the problem of not having the right tool in the future?
I have replaced all the JIS carb screws/bolts on the carbs of my CBXes, H1 and CB1100F with Allen head bolts. I doubt that any potential buyer would try to knock $100.- off any of them if I would sell.

I have a replacement screw from a CB750 points plate with the washers, PM me your address and I will send it to you, courtesy of Pat here at Cycleman.

 By the looks of it those larger ones need replacing also. As Mike mentions I have seen guys go with Allen heads and no more stripped heads.
