New Chain Adjusters coming.
« on: March 16, 2018, 02:02:48 PM »
I have a new product in the works.  A fresh design of rear chain adjuster.
To fit CB 750 and others.
What I need to know  now is if other bikes from the 70,s are also 20mm rear axle size, namely Z1, KS, and VS bikes of the70,s
Hope to have the prototype ready to photograph in about 2 weeks.

I think Z1's had 20mm axles Frank, and I know the early 8 valve GS1000's did, as did the later 16 valve bikes. I'll be interested in seeing your new adjusters. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Can't wait to see them, Frank! My Royal Enfield doesn't have a 20mm axle, but it could do with an upgrade to its adjusters, they are eccentric cams with some kinda notch... lol. Made out of some very low grade metal.

I was thinking of doing the brake side spacer for the 750, I think someone may have made them of late.
They are a very early750 goodie, Racecrafters in Hollyweird sold them in the mid 70s.
No drilled axles for me, I have far less equipment  or access to machine tools, than in the past.
I have another member busy on the frame kits,  should have some too.

Cut down a cbr axle Sean. They look the part, are cheap, and long enough for aftermarket swingers.

Sean, I have the rear spacer in the pic, as well as several front speedometer delete spacers sitting on a shelf. The rear spacer was patterned off a K7 750, with a length of 1.370". I don't know if the rear spacers on other years are the same..

The spacers for the K's and F's are different widths. ;D

What year K vs what year F, Terrence?
Come to think of it, all the F's had disc brakes on the rear, and the caliper bracket acted as the spacer used on the K's with drums. The K7/K8 had wider swing-arms to accommodate the extra 10mm offset of the counter-shaft sprocket, but that may have been all on the left side?

Well I'm no expert Scott, the "F"s did have a small spacer on the disc side betwixt bearing and caliper bracket, but on the drive side the spacer was a different size as well, as I discovered once when I installed one in a K1 rear wheel. ;D

I've got an Effin F axle with spacers laying on my bench right now at the shop if anyone needs/wants a measurement. Neither spacer looks like that one though. One is the greasy spacer on the outside of the sprocket carrier and another between the caliper and the wheel has a shoulder. Sean may want it for his Golden racer though built off K stuff if it fit.

Here is a sneak peek......mockup.
The center of the adjuster end will be round stainless, cross tapped for the adjuster bolt.
The button head will be replaced by a countersunk head Allen bolt sitting flush in an aluminum washer, one each side holding it together.
Should be light the sides are 34 grams, center part approx 42 grams for total of 76 grams plus the bolt, for each side.

Stock K7 is 128 grams less bolt, I think I may have a way to get them to 60 grams or less.

I can't see how they're gonna work Frank, the block between the two side pieces is only 10-12mm wide, with an 8mm hole down the middle, so you'll only have 1-2mm of thread if you use normal bolts on each side, and probably less if you countersink them? ???

There is about  2mm per side, plus the 3mm of the side plate.
The side bolt and washer holds the  the side plate to the center pin, but does not hold the force of pulling the axle back.
On a swingarm with wider end, it would have more threads,
I need to put one together to show it better.

Why not make it one piece, then cut the center out and drill/tap the end for the adjuster? Be even lighter that way and less parts.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

First off, a few people are already doing that, no point in me copying that.
I wanted to  do something different, and I was looking for a product that I could produce with less equipment, than I had before . its not always easy to come up with a new twist on an existing part.
I can make these for other swingarm types, by changing one piece, if  they were milled, the part would be completely  different for every swingarm width.

2mm per side is not enough Frank, that's 2 turns of a 6mm screw. The answer is simple though, punch out the holes in the side plates for the OD of the adjuster bar, (the round bar that you'll thread across for the 8mm adjuster bolts) then just use a slightly larger washer behind the side screws to stop it sliding out either side, or turn the ends of the adjuster bar down to to say, 10mm for the width of the side plates so it can't move sideways. That way you'll have 5mm of thread on either side, which is plenty. ;D
