Exhaust studs
« on: March 17, 2018, 02:05:28 PM »
I am replacing a MAC 4 to 1 exhaust with a Hindle system on a 78 CB550. From what I have seen / read it would be to my benefit to install 45mm studs.

There has been no luck in trying to locate 6mm x 45mm stainless studs.

Can anyone suggest a source or ease my mind that 40mm studs will work.

Edit: The stock studs are already out - so replacement with a new stud is inevitable

Thanks,
Steve

might find more choices in grade 5 or 8 steel...stainless is not necessarily required here, as whatever you use you are gonna want to antiseize the snot out of 'em

+1 ^^^ and Stainless galls EASY after heat, so the nickel silver anti-seize is a priority on stainless. I would go for the grade 8 carbon, and still use the anti-seize. I use it on every bolt I remove. Matter of fact, I got some on me right now from a bolt I just removed in the clutch cover lol... Usually get some on me from just walking past the anti-seize can.

Try fastenall or copper state. Might do ya. Good luck.
If I've learned anything about building a motorcycle, it's check and re-check your work before you put it all back together. Although you do gain more experience by doing it twice.

Scroll to the M6 flange head bolts. Use the dropdown to select 45mm, and enter qty of 8. Apply Zinc-based AntiSieze (aluminum-stainless formula, the messy grey stuff) and use new copper crush O-rings.

It seems lots of us here have an affinity for anti-seize. I use it religiously and ya it seems to spread as if it’s got a mind of its own.
