repro seat
« on: March 15, 2018, 04:43:52 PM »
while i have a nice replacement cover on my seat, the foam is rough and the pan is rougher.  the edges of the pan are super brittle and the repro edge trim won't even make a grab.  any how i've been looking at the DSS reproduction seat.  looks decent and the price is right.  the only downside is no "HONDA" on the back.  some of you may have a work around for this.  can anyone vouch for the quality of these or is there another parts dealer that has something better?  never been unhappy with DSS.  thanks in advance.

Have you checked availability of the DSS seat? As of last week, they've been out of stock for at least a month.

My buddy bought an aftermarket seat, cheap one with a plastic base.  Don't remember where he got it, but I would avoid the plastic base model.

Make yourself a stencil and spray that "HONDA" on there yourself.

DSS UK has plenty of seats if it is CB750. I saw stencils for sale earlier on eBay. It would be fine with correct paint in a set.

I bought the "expensive" version for my K2 build
https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750K2-FOUR-1972/part_275786/

Here the cheaper with a different design how the upper parts is a straight line
https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750K2-FOUR-1972/part_105077/

I have NOS Honda seat in the box for my K6. This has hinges and seat lock part mounted on the seat while DSS need these parts to be taken from the old seat. Something to have in mind if the seat is missing.

DSS seat look rather good but massive as a stock seat look like. I remember why many guys cut the seats and put new special made cover on it. :)

Yeah, I was interested in the DSS seat until I saw that it doesn't have the logo and therefore looks......... weird. I had a seat base with crusty edges, so I bought some cheap car door edge plastic trim which I ran around the base, then put a cover over it, and 12 years on, it's still good. The foam was a bit crumbly too, so I went to my local foam rubber supplier and bought some super thin foam sheet (only about 1mm thick) and lifted, then wrapped the foam and glued it back on the base, and it's held it's shape without old yellow "dandruff" falling thru the holes in the base. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I bought one of the DSS replacement seats for my KO. It did not have the honda logo. I bought one of the stencils and a can of paint which has enough in it to do a thousand seat logos. It did an okay job but it needed touching up by hand to make it a good job.
Suppose they can't legally put the Honda logo on the repro seats for fear of being sued to oblivion.

I'm guessing that's why too Moe, but both the Ebay one's I've bought had the logo's already on them. ;D

I didn’ t have good luck with the Stencil and it was probably my fault. I got the complete seeat from DSS and scraped the cover and plastic pan. All I needed was the foam and found nowhere to buy just the foam. It is a more expensive option and you need a good pan but it came out great.

This is the DSS seat that is out of stock in the U.S........

https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB750K3-FOUR-1973-USA/part_29500/

They do have the more expensive model, wondering what you get for the extra 60 bucks? Both have metal base.

The cheaper has a straight design where upper meet the lower while the other has a nice curved shape as Honda.

Addesive/ sticky stencil on seat must work. The mistake I can think of is to apply too much paint. Very thin layer, dry a little, a very thin layer again. Like spraying stripes.

I've bought a couple of the DSS seats both the cheap and expensive ones. They both have very firm seat foam. Z1 (parts?)  sells just the foam and seat covers also. I'm considering buying a yamiya red foam for my ducktail seat. $200 but it sits awesome and is correct for an early K0.

I had plans to buy the Yamiya K1 seat, low model that look really tough.
http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_182_81&products_id=3512

I could not resist the DSS seat that cost much less and the K2 will be stock build. (except for allen heads on engine covers)

But, my K6 avatar bike should look nice with that K1 seat, Honda written on it.

I'm guessing that's why too Moe, but both the Ebay one's I've bought had the logo's already on them. ;D

yeah terry what about those?  quality good?  thanks.

Yes mate, the two Ebay K0 seats (the one I bought for my K1, and the one I bought from another member here) are great quality, just as good as OEM I reckon, but as has been said the foam is very hard. I'm not gonna get too concerned until it's "aged" a bit, as I had the same problem with my Triumph seat, I had it rebuilt by a specialist and it was very firm for the first year or so, but now it's just right.

I bought a cheap Ebay K0 seat cover recently (it came with a new strap and the Honda logo stencilled on for 25 bucks, from memory?) and I need the foam, I might have to splash out and buy one of those Yamiya foams, and glue it to my other K1 seat base. ;D

Price on the David Sliver one looks great. I haven't seen a better deal on ebay. Not sure I care about the Honda logo on the back.
