Electrolysis- rust removal
« on: March 17, 2018, 12:23:19 PM »
Hey folks,

I’m doing electrolysis on my tank as I type this. I need advice on how to prevent the flash rust once I’m done here.

Once I completely dump out the rusty innards and solution left behind, what do you guys use to rinse and prevent any flash rusting?

The tank will not sit, I’m going to install it on my bike tonight or tomorrow.

How do I treat with prep n etch?
Just let it slosh around and sit?

Yes. Fill the tank, let it sit overnight, and drain, rinse, and dry immediately, with hot air preferably. Then use the two-stroke oil mixed with gas, to rinse and coat. The Prep-n-etch gives an iron-phosphate coating that works well, and it removes any rust left in there.

I use muriiatic acid to get rid of rust, then rinse the stuff out soap and water. Then I use Por15 metal prep. After that it gets rinsed and sprayed with oil mist until I put it in service unless I decide to use a tank liner. It is a quick and clean fix for moderately crappy fuel tanks. I tried the metal rescue route and found it  took too long with moderate results. The acid is the way I shall go from now on and it is much cheaper to do in my case. Both were done several months ago.

Fogging oil spray in the tank works well. Try not to blow the little red plastic straw into the tank. Don't ask.

yep, the Prep-n-etch gives the protective coating, but rinse well with hot water and dry immediately. Follow with oil fog or fuel - oil mix.
