engine's out what should I replace?
« on: March 17, 2018, 05:39:16 PM »
Since my engine is out, i figured I could change the starter and points to electronic.  Thoughts on moving to electronic points?

This could possibly get kind of popcorny  ;) . There are definitely two camps, those that like their stock points and others who love their electronic stuff.

Gotcha.  Well, I am ok going either way so no worries.  It's just out so might as well do some stuff while it's out.   Need a new exhaust too.  want a black 4 into 2.  any suggestions?

Is the motor a leaker? If yes, replace the pucks and gaskets.

How was it running?

Yup,
But.... you could get both camps by getting Hondaman's electronic ignition conversion, it keeps the stock points, and they switch a transistor on the circuit to power the coils... the points last forever (almost), and you have the advantage of this millennia technology (almost) lol. And, you get rid of the condensers also, I believe... Oh, and when you get done, replace the engine ;)

Need more info. What bike, what was the reason for pulling the motor, hoe much $$ do you want to spend, was it running prior to removal, what’s the goal (track bike, daily driver, weekend warrior)?

Having the motor out doesn’t help the installation of electronic ignition, it actually hinders it :). If the starter sounds when you connect it to the battery then it’s working.

I say keep points if they’re in good shape because there’s nothing wrong with points. Aside from cleaning the exterior and replacing leaking gaskets that’s about it. These motors are very reliable and few aftermarket parts are better than the old OEM ones that are currently in there.

The ignition can be changed any day when engine is in. If engine is out, there is a reason for it, right? Or only repainted the frame?
Open valve cover and inspect. If it has leaked oil, check the leak and replace gaskets.
Long time used might need new chains inside if rattling.

If it runs fine, no leak.... maybe a paint tune up only. I use rattle can spray that work fine without need of baking it in an oven in over 100C, maybe closer to 200C.

Ignitions have different users.
Racers that want the best performance with need of tuning the advance curves. Throttle sensor reading the throttle lift connected to an ign module. The advance might not need to be advanced  with increasing rpm's only, maybe a little bit retarded at a certain rpm later on too.

or people that like the old tech stuff that can be a vital part of the bikes heart.
or others that do not have time or have got the feeling for how the old points should be set and maintained.
or combo between old tech and new.... Hondaman's ign module.

Another thing is trust, if you have plans to take bike on a long ride and need to trust the electrical system that has to cope with heat, cold and maybe water.

There is no right or wrong (except for not adjusted ignition), follow what your need tells you and maybe your heart and eventual love for the bike from the old days with the old survived tech, still working :)

Many restores nowadays are restomods where new tech is implemented in the old vehicle. Like old US muscle cars, replacing an old fuel drinking V8 with a new modern V8 with much more power, cleaner and leaner + replacing bad drum brakes with discs + new suspension.

Up to the owner.
Fun to discuss though! ;)

Sorry, it's a 1978 CB750.  I am restoring it and bought it from a guy already all apart.  They changed the rings and that is all.  At this pint, I'll try an run it and see what happens.  BUt might change to electronic ignition now.  It has roughly 36K miles on it.

Hopefully it has new gaskets, was honed and has new nickel washers under the cam towers.
