Which CB450?
« on: March 17, 2018, 06:32:40 AM »
Went to the Piston Power Show in Cleveland yesterday and they had this bike on display. It said the base was a Honda CB450. I had a hard time and could not identify it. What was it originally?

Never mind! After I posted the picture I saw that there was conflicting info on the tag. It said 1978 CB400 on the printed part, but the handwritten specification list said CB450. 1978 CB400 Hawk

Yeah, there were SOHC CB400/450 twins in the US ("Hawk" series, late 70's, early 80's).
Difficult to discriminate between the 400 and 450, nearly identical.
There was an automatic tranny variation of the Hawks in the US too.

Well, If we look at the various years, the 78/79 CB400 TI Hawk I had spoke wheels and a mechanical drum brake in the front. The 78/79 CB400 TII Hawk II had Constar wheels and hydraulic front disc brake. There were no CB450s between the 1974 CB450K7 and the 1982 CB450SC. The SC engines which were similar to the 400s in the Hawk had black cases.
Again, the confusing issue here was, some guy who wrote the display spec sheet, mistakenly put CB450 on it, instead of CB400. I did not see that. Need better glasses. Or watch more thoroughly.

What a turd...boring bike rendered useless, I guess the paint is nice.  Anyone check out how not to set up rearsets?

Really don't know what is going on. Seems like the "builders" are all following the same cookie cutter pattern, no matter what marque.
After every other custom car had a surfboard attached to it, not come the motorcycles with the skateboards... ::)

no.  skateboards go under your feet, not your ass...and that #$%* has nothing to do with cafe racers

It'd be the natural progression for the hipster cafe crowd.

It would indeed be difficult to undo all of the damage.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

I'd like to add further that it seems to be to me much easier to cafe a bike than to do a quality stock restoration.
I cafed the Canary 20 years ago; easy job.
The 400F is basically done as absolutely near to stock as I can manage.
For me anyway, this was the much more care intensive of the two.
Love em both though.
