Wire issue in engine chain sprocket housing
« on: March 20, 2018, 07:40:20 PM »
So i took off the cover to clean the chain sprocket and surrounding area.. and i think i may have disconnected a wire plug from the bunch that sits in here..

Im not educated at all in the wiring department and not sure what to do with this.

Should i just electrical tape the wire where the copper threads are exposed and plug it back  into the “female” type socket?

That be your alternator wiring, check for broken strands etc. If good, I would insulate them with the high temp cloth stuff they are all ready covered with. available from a good electrical wholesaler. here in NZed anyway

If we are talking about a CB750 then based on what I can see regarding the condition of your harness at this location of high amperage alternator connections I would do two things:

1) Replace the "sub harness" between the alternator and the main harness. Parts-n-More part number #24-4021
http://www.partsnmore.com/parts/honda/cb750k/?q=24-4021

2) Replace the female connectors on the high amp yellow wires from the stator:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,148188.msg1688494.html#msg1688494

This will help stave off electrical gremlins at this weak point in the wiring harness. I usually replace the male and female bullet connectors on the yellow wires at this location of every CB750 I lay my hands on. The old insulators are typically fused together and have to be cut apart. I cut the old connector off right at the crimp and only sacrifice less than 1/4" of wire that way. The female connectors from the stator are a little tough to do in place (without removing the trans cover or stator) but it can be done.

+1 on Wilbur's link to his crimping terminals, it is the ONLY way to go, don't try this with the ones you can buy at the auto parts electrical section, they are not good for much. You can find the crimpers on eBay, or at a wire supplier, mine are made by a company called PICO, and are made similar to Wilbur's ones, and produce a factory crimp with the type of OEM terminals we both use. I found a good supply of terminals for bullet and spade on eBay Cheap, and they work well. I also got the harness from 4 into1 from the alternator to the bike harness, and replaced ALL the bullet terminals at the wires in your picture. Made a world of difference.
The crimpers are an investment, and you can use them on any of your wiring harnesses if you have more than one bike. WAY better than the cobbled up repairs I have come across from PO's butcher jobs lol...
Here is an example of terminals you can get cheap... but might have to wait a couple weeks if from China lol

They are my "go to" for connectors. Be sure to get the 3.5mm bullets to fit the 70's (and many later) Hondas. The 4mm bullets are bigger than the 3.5mm connectors that are used on the SOHC/4's.
