Replacing kickstarter shaft 71' CL100
« on: February 22, 2018, 12:44:44 PM »
I'm looking to replace the broken shaft on on my 1971 CL100.  I guess there is no other way to do this without splitting the case?  It looks like it came with a 13mm shaft from the factory and was upgraded to a 15mm shaft a few years later.  Does anyone know if I can replace the 13mm shaft with the newer 15mm?   Thank you in advance!

So I'm on the fence with this project... the motorcycle needs attention elsewhere besides the motor, and having a restored CL100 isn't on the top of my list.

Has anyone had luck welding this shaft?  I know it isn't ideal, but replacing a failed shaft (sounds relatively common) with another inferior component has me looking for an easy way out.

The splined piece looks to be made from cast steel?  If welding that piece doesn't look viable, what about cutting it back beyond where it comes in contact with the oil seal and welding the new shaft in place?

I wouldn't think that a broken kick shaft would be all that common. I don't know what is correct for that bike but if someone has modified the cases to accommodate a bigger shaft I would guess that maybe their work was less than perfect.  Your best bet might be to source another bottom end on EBay or CL and get back on track with the project.

Somebody else might chime in and know more than I do about getting the kick shaft out of your current motor but I would guess that you wouldn't need to split the motor.  If you pull the clutch basket you can probably get to the kick shaft and the shift shaft.

Here's a bottom end that might get you going.  Just an example, there may be others.

You do have to split the cases, I'm in a sort of process myself.

Been there done that, I actually thought about welding the kicker on too.

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Motor is out.  Im pretty confident i can weld it.  I don't want to invest the time or money into doing it any other way at this point.  It was a trail bike, and will continue to be one if the kicker holds.  Thanks
