Supersport gas tank
« on: July 01, 2007, 05:12:06 PM »
Interesting observation about 78 750 supersport gas tanks. You almost never see a good one. They are always very rusty... I bought and sold two of these units before deciding to keep this third unit. The gas tank is always a wreck... Totally rusted through on the bottom with pin holes.

On this third unit I'm working now, it was time to decide if the tank was useable. I basically take a very course  60 grit sanding disk and hit everything just to see what shows up.. Quit often on these tanks you will have paint blisters with rust beneath it... As you grind down the rust. The pinholes start showing.  This tank is indeed usable. No pinholes. The interesting this is... The rust appears to start at the metal surface under the original paint and primer.  Honda must have used a special formula to guarantee rust. I'm glad I don't have to go find a good one. They don't show up often.

Bodain,

If you do find rust under the paint and primer then it's probably spread from somewhere further along the seam...I fixed mine about 6 times before finally giving it the flick when I luckily found another later model one in very good condition..

they either have rusted out in the front corners or rear corners - or either side of the petcock (lowest parts to gather moisture)
mine is a 75/6 750f and now have a 77/8 f tank
