Helmet shopping
« on: March 29, 2018, 06:02:08 AM »
Shopping for a new helmet.  Baffling number of options out there in the  $100-300 range.  Anyone have experience with HJC-CL17?  I am looking for a simple, safe and quiet full face lid.  By quiet I mean no annoying buzz or wind noise.

I have that helmet. It’s very good and affordable. It’s Snell rated, so it is a bit large. It has a shield lock, so wind isn’t much of a problem. The only reason I don’t wear it as much as I otherwise would is that it’s somewhat round, and I prefer a long oval.

I find that when I ride any longer than 15 minutes,  I prefer to wear earplugs.  It is less tiring for me.  I do that with every type of helmets and bikes I use.  Prevents hearing loss.   When listening to heavy metal, one has to enjoy the sound fully with out the plugs!!

I ride street and race in and HJC and I find them the best bang for the buck of any helmet at any price. For $200 you get a helmet that is DOT and SNELL rated, tons of vents, locking face shield, decent graphics, and while not the lightest, definitely not the heaviest helmet either. They fit my noggin well and are very comfy with no pressure points. I dont wear ear plugs on the road but should, and have worn them racing, otherwise hearing loss is imminent.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I have a CL-17.  It's not the lightest, quietest, or any other est out there, but it does all those things OK.  It is only Snell 2010 which means it isn't as up to date as 2015.  I believe those ratings expire every 10 years.

I have an HJC CL-17 that I bought to race in, and replaced it with a Snell 2015 when it went out of date, (racers have to replace every 5 years as of the date inside the helmet) but I still use it on the street. Very good helmet. I also like the Scorpion brand, I have used two of them on the track, and they fit well for me as I wear glasses also, and they accommodate them. The 1st one got retired from a low side at the track in turn 13 (Nelson Ledges), had rash all over the helmet and face shield... I promptly replaced it with another Scorpion, but I still like the HJC... I actually have an old HJC from the '90's that Still fits well!

Ear plugs are a good thing, HOWEVER: I find wearing earplugs in a full face helmet keeps me too oblivious to things that I need to hear around me. Especially sirens of police and fire vehicles....

I agree... The only time I wear earplugs is when I ride without a fairing or helmet... then, they are necessary to keep the wind out of my ears, especially on colder days. Hey, I like riding my 2006 Kawasaki Concours without a helmet, its enjoyable on a nice, summer day. And, in my area, its a Choice...
Now being a retired pipe welder in the construction industry, when I started there wasn't any OSHA or any requirements, and so we wore earplugs if they were even provided by our employers. Now, they are a requirement, and if you are caught without them on, well you can be terminated. The same with hardhats... they could be worn any way you wanted, and weren't necessary if there wasn't anything that could fall on your head.. now, there is zero tolerance for not wearing them correctly... Makes me glad I'm and old fart and retired.
But for all you youngsters, make sure you keep safe, and protect your hearing.. or did I say Earring...

My 1st helmet ever so I've nothing to compare with but I love it. Especially the white option. Black is too hot and designs start cool but get annoying when you're just trying to relax. Comes with a shaded visor and it's got these little vents everywhere. I imagine standard in this price range. Little if any bad reviews but not many. I wish they came with visor sticker guards(if they exist) like a pack of 3 and you can order a pack later for $12.99 Cruz I dropped mine a few times and now she looks abused, but great quality and my head feels real safe(body feels like a dead man waiting to be born. Just my 1st bike ever jitters slowly leaving) and comfortable. Tried so scoop out spit with a spoon once. Don't try it. Just swallow or wait. And can't bite dry winter dead lip skin either. You'll go mad. No games for your head in this thing. One job to watch in front of you.

I got this LS2 helmet last season and I've been much happier with it as compared to my old HJC. Its lighter, better wind noise reduction and such with good ventilation. DOT/ECE cert and an excellent price point.

Glad you got the white option color. It is a proven fact that car drivers see white helmets before any other color... might have something to do with Law Enforcement Officers having White Helmets too... and don't listen to Foreigner while wearing it...
