cb650sc carbs? will they work?
« on: March 27, 2018, 04:02:48 AM »
Hi folks!
I think I'm giving up on my vb44's  not because I can't get them tuned right, they just don't fit in my project.  anyways, the later dohc carbs look like they may work for my project, but I don't know if there going to work..  anyone know if the spacing is the same on the later cb carbs?  anyone run them?

You’ll need to tell us what your project is for us to help, no? VB44 carbs are the SOHC CB650 carbs for the, I believe 81-82. Is this the bike you have and you’re asking if the DOHC 650 carbs will fit? No earlier SOHC4 carbs fit the head spacing of the 81-82 650, but early 750 carbs fit the 79-80 I believe (definitely 79 but I’m not certain on the 80).

ok the project..  81 cb650 sohc with vb44's (thought it was vb44's) in a 3 wheeler :D  the engine is tucked up so deep into the frame that the dashpots are almost touching the backbone,  problem is the choke,  the rear stabilizer bar (where the choke pull would normally go) is about 5mm away from the backbone and there's no room for a choke pull,  plus it looks like the later dashpots are shorter, and might give me a hair more room, but is the bore spacing the same is my main question..  and a picture is worth a 1000 words

Ah, that’s awesome. Ok so 81 650 head. Other than the VB44 carbs I don’t know for sure what else fits. Member Camrector was saying something about using some year Ninja fit. Sorry, can’t be much help.

short answer no.  I have a 84 im parting out and no the spacing is different than the 81.   Anything can be made to work. LOL

I was told the dohc 750 had the same carbs as the sohc CV's.

well interesting chain of events,  I went down to my used parts guy,  and he said the same thing, zx600 carbs will work,  so I wound up with a $1500 set of carbs,  but they came with a free running xr650l with them lol..  seriously though,  I bought another bike because it was cheap and I have been searching for one for a while,  and he threw in the zx carbs..  we shall see if they fit...

Nice. One thing with the 650 head spacing: the rubber insulators have a slight jog in them. You can have them in a number of orientations to alter the spacing a bit. Turn them all out if the rack is slightly wider, or all in if the rack is slightly skinnier. This might not make sense but if you’re looking at the insulators it will. They should be all level though or else you risk air leaks and having the carbs rack crooked.

I’m thinking his doesn’t make sense, haha. Hope you get what I’m saying. I tried to draw what I mean but I’m on the train and it looked like garbage.

The rubber connectors also have an arrow on them showing which way round they go

I am not using the original spacers / boots, there too long,  I have the carbs butted up against the intake and am running 1.5" ID silicone boots..  and yes I get what you're saying,  the boots could have been rotated to change alignment, kinda like a cam bolt on a front suspension of a car..   with the new zx carbs I hope to be able to gain some room to space them back slightly...
