Kickstand safety switch
« on: April 13, 2018, 05:33:06 PM »
After taking off with my kickstand down maybe a half dozen time on the way to Dolores and back last year I decided it was time.
Not sure how much luck I'll have posting pics but ahead of that I'll tell you the parts I used and where I got them:
I used a clutch lever switch from a '75 goldwing (still available and cheap). It's #11 in this fiche: http://shop.westernhonda.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2449991&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1975&fveh=131056

The relays are Bosch/Tyco. I got them and the dual socket from PartsExpress:
https://www.parts-express.com/te-connectivity-tyco-electronics-12-vdc-5-pin-relay-spdt-20-30a-(formerly-bosch)--330-070
https://www.parts-express.com/12-vdc-bosch-type-dual-relay-socket-for-door-lock-unlock-circuits--330-078

The sheet metal to hold everything I cobbled together myself. The voltage regulator and rectifier are from Oregon Motorcycle Parts since both OEM parts failed over the years. That regulator, by the way, is reeeally good. Welding is involved to fasten the switch holder to the frame.

I've been doing a lot of wiring lately so I forked out for a crimping tool and connectors (from Vintage Connections) so I'm able to redo the bullets and tap into existing connectors by installing a new blade with a second wire crimped in (neutral switch for example).

I modified the wiring diagram I found on this site and added the new stuff the way I wired it. I tried to scan the diagram in but my scanner refuses to work. So I took a photo of it and it looks like it's vertical instead of horizontal. Apologies. I hate screwing with computers. I hope I'm able to post the pics I have. Please be patient.

This setup allows the engine to run only if the kill switch is set to RUN and either the transmission is in neutral or the kickstand is up.

I put in a bypass switch in case something goes tits-up.
