You forgot the best learning part dave, picking gravel from the road rash... great for teaching one not to crash!

yep ya gotta learn how to crash aswell yammaman, like a lotta us in the day I grew up on dirt bikes, toy mini bikes then small cycles then full size motocross or enduro machines, ive spent more time on dirt than paved I think?had a lotta crashes, never got really hurt but we all had some great high speed crashes, its this experience im sure that's given me an edge as a road rider?aswell as the fact ive driven heavy trucks for 40 years that gives me a few hours of expecting the unexpected to happen right in front of you?
dig this ford Fairmont wagon,351 Windsor, went the same towing bikes or not.

Hehe... a roll of duct tape, and some tie wire and you could fix anything on those Fairmonts! They were the economy budget run forever ford...
I think these new designers and engineers of bikes might not have what it takes to get out on one, so they want to stop folks from learning what these two wheels are all about! I mean... really... when you slide on the lip of a driveway entry into the local gas station because you hit it at too much of an angle in the wet, HOW is TC and ABS going to help you with that? It's the learning from what we do, not what is avoided by something that interferes with our learning curve... THAT is what makes us better riders.

ha ha yeah oh fuzziest one!ive only dropped a bike on the tarmac once,it pays to dress properly!i grabbed too much front brake going in hot into an intersection right hand turn and locked on the oil slick,as it was it was an old yammy it400,anyway I laid it down and slid so comfortably shaving down those buckles on the old rossi boots,i was more concerned with cars behind me,the motor didn't stall so I just picked it up as I was sort of still half on it and stabbed down down down till I had first then took off in my merry way as if nothing had happened, and in reality it hadn't?id dropped bikes so many times on dirt it didn't faze me as I didn't get hurt,it would've frightned anyone who had never crashed a bike before, mustve looked funny to the car drivers?bang guy goes down, gets up and rides off?

As a good friend of mine knows all too well, they use a metal bristle brush for that in the ER.

From my perspective I would love a small bike, but I can't buy one in a price range that I can manage, the thing with a small bike is you can feel like you are flying at 30 Mph as well as some thing else at 300 and if you drop it it usually easier to kick it off of yourself and pick it up afterwards. If your driving something in larger class, can you get it off of you without a crane, can you say that looks like a stunning babe up on the hill over there, can you hop the curb and go up the hill to look, not so much on something fast and heavy you'll get it's plastic all manky as far as the beginning riders they should have graduated licences and the manufactures should be getting behind that, so that long term they can sell more bikes. We all know it's not the name or the macho image it's the feeling of flight on the ground that does it, the 7 league boots.

Does harley even make a 300cc anything anymore?

Pretty certain they would suffer to adapt if 'murica implemented graduated moto licensing.
The millenials wouldn't be able to blow 13k on a used ultra classic and cruise down to the local HD bible club house!
