TEK points and condenser
« on: April 12, 2018, 02:59:07 PM »
Hey! I found an almost new set of TEK points and condensers today on a 1978 CB750A points plate! They are in great shape, and will serve well rather than the ones that came with the CB750K1, looks like the Mitsubishi symbol on them.. Anyway, looking forward to installing them, and setting the timing and dwell with my Actron pair of instruments!

Nice find. Hopefully the rubbing blocks aren't worn too much. No worries though, I am still running the set that I rehabbed with the blocks off of crappy diachi points.

I bought 3 sets of NEW TEC points on eBay very cheap 2years ago.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=156784.0

Another seller that sold a box with 10 new very old condensers that hopefully work. They must have been old in the 70's too ;)

Important to be aware of the crappy Daichii points. Sometimes sold for way too much named Honda NOS. Like this one that cost as a NOS TEC point plate

Thanks, PeWe, my points are the same as the eBay link for 1st NOS , have that tri-lotus petal stamp, so they are the daichi points...

Did you double-spring the points with the Daichi springs added when you swapped the rubbing blocks? That's supposed to be a great way to help out these ignitions for the CB750's! You used the bolts from the points connections to swap the rubbing blocks, right?

I didn't double spring mine. I secured the new rubbing blocks with a rivet and washer to keep it from pulling through.

double springs was a racer trick to prevent point float at very high rpm, double springs may wear the block faster, polish the cam well what ever you use.

+3 polish the cam
I grinded the cams on 2 advancers recently since they had marks grinding the points bakelite.
Much better after 400, 800, 1000 grit. All around to grind it all around equal. Hand held twisting the paper around, no machines used.

I will look at the points cam, I have 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit around here, and will polish it well! Thanks for the tips, guys!

I can't say that I "polished" my advancer cam, but it got a decent cleaning and light lube. I think the biggest improvement that I made was in the rubbing blocks and straightening (somewhat) the shaft. My bikes ignition went from absolutely uncontrollable to tame and in-spec, especially after I invested in the correct tools. I have the opinion that these bikes can have the ability to run decently even with poor tuning and/or worn parts. I also know for a fact that you can really sharpen the tune by refreshing those wear items.

Next time you replace the rubbing blocks, consider using the bolts that held the wiring for the points to install the block instead of a rivet. They are available after you strip the junk points for their rubbing block. On an aside, my Actron timing light works really well, along with my Actron dwell meter! :D

If those condensers are original you might as well chuck 'em. They will only quickly fail, electrotytics that old are bad news.

I wonder how old the NOS points are.
They work fine on my bike together with Hondaman ign module. Hondaman mentioned in a post that the condenser will work despite an old condenser since the point work as a trigger only. No specific current as stock.
