What is this brake drum from? BRAKE/WHEEL ID
« on: April 13, 2018, 07:03:54 PM »
Wow, it has been a long time since I posted here(seven years I think?)! I missed the SOHC4 forums, and I'm excited to get reacquainted with the best dang community on the net. Anyway, last fall I bought a load of vintage motorcycle wheels from a guy in nearby Fayetteville AR. His name was Steve and he didn't know what bikes the wheels had come from, and neither did I, but I bought 44 of them and loaded in the bed of my '69 Chevy. Steve had planned on making a decorative fence out of them(oOoOokay)but I would like to restore and resell them. The main problem with that is that I don't know what make and model motorcycles most of these wheels are from. I have been able to identify three of them as CB350twin rear wheels, and I believe I aslo have a set of CB750 four front and rear wheels(unfortunately the rear is missing the brake drum assembly). I'm hoping you guys can help me ID some of these wheels, and I'm starting tonight with one of the cooler ones. Out of the 44 wheels I got, eight of them have Twin-Leading-Shoe drum brakes. Does anyone know what this one is from? It has 40 spokes, and IIRC it had an 18" rim. The drum is approximately 10 inches in diameter, and 1 3/4" wide at the spoke flanges. It has a 15mm axle, the brake shoes are about 34mm wide, and inside the drum it says "MAX DIA 201.0mm". Any ideas? BTW, as I post wheels on here, if you guys see one you need I'll give you a heck of a deal. Also, message me if you're looking for a certain wheel and maybe I'll have it. Most of the wheels I got are 18" and 19" with 36 spokes, but I do have some 21inchers(a few with alloy hoops). Some are disc brake and some are drum(but most of the drums are missing). I even got one with a shouldered alloy TAKASAGO hoop that I would really like to ID. It looks pretty cool. Thanks guys, Jim

I think CB 160 used brake arm that looked like that,  not sure about it having seperate Speedo drive.

Thanks for the reply 754. I've been thinking about your frame kit(I'm in the process of rebuilding my '75 CB750 engine, which has around 90,000 miles and is pretty tired and very oil-leaky). Maybe if I sell some of these wheels I'll be able to afford it. I think I solved the mystery of this brake already though, haha. There is a recent post on here about a member's CB450...and I believe that is what this drum is to. I did some googling and I'm fairly certain. I also think I may have a T500 Titan front wheel, and I think that shouldered(flanged) one is to a TX650 Yamaha. I'm not certain though. I'll have to get some pics posted. I also looked on Ebay and was suprised to see how much some of these wheels are worth. Even a ratty CB350 rearwheel is fetching over $50 plus $30 shipping. I'm planning on fixing up the good ones, with new bearings and brake shoes. Any opinion on the best place to buy those parts? Thanks again, Jim

Looks too big to be for a 160 and the 160 has a little slot in the brake panel that the fork slides into as a stay. Im 99% thats either drom a cb77 or an early cb450

It's early, the 67  CL 175 and 68 CB 350, had different type arms on them already.
Hmmmm  just looked at a 68 450 on this page, uses the same arms.

After looking at my cb77, i see it is slightly different from it, but it looks identical to whats on my 66 cb450.

You guys are good! I believe the CB450 is what this is off of. Definitely a brake worth fixing up. I'm thinking about milling some "speed holes" in it, and giving it a mirror polish. I'd also thought about doing a custom scoop or screen instead, like some of the racing bikes used to have. I know these TLS drums are still used in a couple vintage racing classes where discs are not allowed. I think I'll check to make sure drum mods are legal. Thanks for the help! Now I've gotta get some more pics of other mystery wheels. And I have to get my blasting cabinet working with soda, That'll save a ton of time restoring 40+ wheels. Jim

What kind of a deal can you do on this brake?
