Topic: CB750F2 or 3 engine serial #.. with an F!

Well, after looking at a bunch of SOHC Hondas, I found this one today outside in the back yard, on the shelf. It has black cylinder barrels, and the serial number ID plate area is inline with the bike instead of perpendicular like my CB750K1 is. The serial number is also very peculiar, as it starts with a B instead of a C... and says AF after the B750. Check out the pics!
EDIT! After a closer look, it appears an E is there instead of F...

Pretty sure that's a 78 Automatic engine.

It could be, not sure if the A's had black cylinder barrels, though... although its possible that someone mixed parts together. I will check the right side of the cases, to see if it's an automatic. The engine is buried among other things lol... Thanks!

Charlie, those cylinders certainly look like they may have been rattle canned...very common thing to find from back in the day and more recently too.  The F2/3 engines that are black from Honda, are completely black, including the valve cover (But not the inspection caps!), cylinder head, cases, and case covers and it is a very attractive and smooth semi-gloss coating.

78's were black like the F's. Cylinder was either painted and/or replaced.

The other side of the engine isn't visible unless I dig it out of the heap lol, but thanks for referencing that serial number. The valve cover is missing all the allen screws, and its a parts motor, so that's why it's sitting out here. Back when it was deposited, the CB750's were considered cheap and not worth the effort to preserve... now, they are. I think these have been sitting for over 10-15 years or more.
