Ohmyohmy...  :-[

How did I never notice this before?  There is a spacer on the oil filter?  Help!  I rebuilt the bike and never noticed there needed to be a spacer or that it was missing...  I need to make a new one up here, but what is the length on it?  If anybody has said info, much appreciated as it is apart for spring service at the moment.

Muchly needed assistance appreciated.

I don't see a spacer in the parts diagram.

Yes, I saw that, it describes it as an oil filter bolt sleeve. None of my SOHC4's or my GL1000, which all use the same oil filter cover and basic assembly as your 650 use a sleeve like that. Hopefully one of the 650 guys knows.

That is exactly why I never noticed it before now.  My others dont have it either, even though same filter.  I get my filters from honda here to do my bikes each spring for oil.  Got around to getting the haynes manual for the sohc 650 and was reading when it mentioned it.  Looked it up and saw it on this bikes parts.  Not a complex part by any means, worst case is I can calculate or use reference pics to get the size and machine one if cannot get one as a part.  I do prefer having a functioning oil filter.

Damn, I’m not ready to do an oil change on my 650 yet. From what I remember it’s about 3/4” long, maybe a full inch.

These might help either in buying or seeing the size referenced to the bolt to make your own. Or message the seller and have them measure it.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking as well.  Using reference pictures to get the geometry on it in order to cut one.  Yay an access to lathes and DOM tubing.  I would rather just make and get it done, but the buying one is an option, no reason for something so simple though :-)

Yeah, I’d do the same. But DOM tubing? The original is aluminum I believe and thick enough to not cut the filter’s rubber grommet. I haven’t seen DOM tubing that thick.

But either way, have at it.

I'd use aluminum round stock with the correct OD then ream the ID. That will prevent any steel-steel corrosion.

DOM because you can get it in some nice stuff and probably  have similar around, use spare spring washers to insulate.  Aluminum round would need to get the aluminum round stock...  Didnt know it was aluminum, suspected though.  Regardless, can measure up diameters easy.  Length is the hard part.

Use the spring free length as in the picture they look pretty close in length for your measurement.

Well, cannot get one in time, not without two arms and a first born's leg for cost for when I need.  So made my own with what I had.

So piece of DOM tubing and using the old filter rubber as an insulator to the aluminum.  Drew up the filter and components in CAD to help ensure I am at least close to the correct length.

Better than not having it at all...

That should work. Does DOM tubing have flakes in it? It looks like it’s cast or something. Actually looks like plastic tubing.

It can have millscale.  I media blasted then cleaned it before that picture.   I used DOM because it doesnt have the weld seam inside plus a much smoother finish.

Ah it’s been blasted, that’s why it has texture. Makes sense to me.
