Got the tires replaced today with Pirelli Sport Demons.

That was the last time I’m doing tires and tubes myself if I can help it. What a pain...if I could go back I’d gladly pay the 70$ to have a local shop do it.

Finally took the bike for a spin today

Was awesome finally getting it moving!

Learned a few things:

1.) Those handlebars are absolutely awful .....I'm going to shop around and order some today once I figure out what I want. Thinking of the Biltwell tracker https://www.biltwellinc.com/p310/buy/parts-amp-accessories/handlebars/tracker/-tracker-handlebars-7-8-quot-chrome/

2.) The Starter doesn't seem to work when hot....it spins up just fine but sounds like it isn't catching on the starter gear. I noticed once before when I was having the fueling issue that the starter gear wouldn't seem to engage sometimes. It would start to turn over and then would clunk and spin. Kickstart work just fine though....so theres that. I'm assuming this is likely the starter clutch?

All in all was a good first trip...haven't registered it yet so couldn't ride it around that much. Not that the handlebars would have permitted it!

Thanks Mike...I wouldn't have thought about that. I'll check it this week before riding it more.

Think about CB400f bars -- similar but with pre-made access holes for wiring.

Or Euro K1 (CB750) bars are just as good as the 400 bars. I have them on both my CB750s (after removing the superbike bars/tomesseli cafe cars/K1 bars US spec etc etc). The Euro K1 bars are the way to go or Tomesseli bars for cafe comfort.

Thanks Andy...I ordered the 400f bars to try them, but I'll keep the others in mind of they don't work out. As soon as I get the bike registered and the tires worn it I'll post a ride report about them. To be honest I was so focused on the uncomfortable bars today I didn't even pay attention to handling!

When the rotor bolt came loose on my bike, it just spun; it wasn't intermittent. When the starter spins a loose rotor on the crank, it loosens the bolt even more.

I vote for the 3 triplets of spring, cup, and roller. When they are failing they make the starter work at random. THey are nearly impossible to tell they've failed by eye, only the symptom you describe is the clue. The clutch itself is likely OK, just the spring. cup and roller sets.

CB400F bars all mounted...haven’t taken for a ride yet but they look good and gives a much better riding position.

Yes, those bars were the hot ticket for street racers back when they came out, esp since they were pre-drilled. Any tank to switched clearance problems?

Nope...I can fully lock the bars in either direction and the throttle cable bends just clear the tank. I just took it for a ride and the improvement is like night and day.

Hey Jerry!

I rode it down to a local motorcycle show this afternoon...pretty much the first shake down ride.

Bike pulls like crazy above 5k! Nothing like any of my other bikes

The new handlebars improved the comfort and control a ton. I haven't pulled the plugs, but the jetting feels pretty good....dyno will tell on that front. I think my floats may be set a little too high as I get some surging at idle. I think I'm going to order a new bowl drain screw and plumb it to run a tube so I can visually check the float level on the carbs.

Bike seem to like to idle best around 2k....this normal for the worked over engine? May also be a side effect of float height...

I haven't slogged it around that hard as I need to break in the new tires. I also think I'm going to check the balance on the front wheel again as I had some vibration on the front end. However the front springs seem pretty stiff so it may have just been road quality itself I was feeling.

I also need to pull the alternator cover to check the Rotor bolt and the starter clutch. It's pretty consistent now that the starter doesn't engage...it just wines up and clatters. Been using the kick starter today.

As soon as I get things shook out I'm going to schedule a dyno session to see how its doing.

Once you remove the rotor/ bolt after it has been tightened at the factory it is difficult to get it to stay stuck. The taper interference system is the culprit I'd say. I have run into this before. That bolt has to be hammered down with an air impact. Maybe some Green Loctite would help. Anyway......I have seen this problem multiple time always after the rotor was pulled off the crank. Once it is tightened again the rotor generally stays stuck on the end of the crank. Like I said...I have seen this time and time again.

Pulled the plugs. Looks like 2/4 are running rich or carbon fouled.

Haven’t bike has done about 12 miles of in town riding.

Other than verifying float heights again any suggestions?

The trick is to lean it slightly to the right and put a shim under the pedal part of the centerstand, if you still have one.

Had to order a head gasket for the Honda Cub....so while waiting on that I decided to take a look at the Starer rattle issue that has become a persistent.

Got the bike propped over so as not to loose some oil and it was off with the cover to check the rotor bolt.

There's our culprit right there

Not the bolt or the starter clutch...but the starter gear....toasty

So it's out with the starter.....I'm assuming with that gear being broken it's a whole new starter required (or at least a donor to swap out). All the other gears look good with no chipped or missing teeth.

I also assume I need to drop the oil pan to check it and the pickup screen for the broken bits. Any other recommendations on other steps to take/check?
