« on: April 18, 2018, 09:39:45 PM »
Grew up watching speedway at our local track, Ivan Mauger used to come home for our season, bringing mates from Europe to ride the New Zealand series. good times, another hero gone.

Scunny - we might have to educate our US friends about "Speedway" and the legend that Ivan was.
Speedway is the NZ, Australian and European version of dirt track racing using special single cylinder bikes. Ivan was a multiple world champion in Speedway and Long Track (larger ovals) as well and was a true legend in the sport.
Like you said - another hero gone.

No education necessary. Speedway was popularized in the US about the same time as in Australia and New Zealand. I believe it still happens on the west coast of the US. You still see the bikes at shows for sale every now and then. Quite amazing pieces of motorcycle racing history. Sad to hear another motorcycle great has gone.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Sad news. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.
He was a "straight up no bull#$%* bloke".

We rode in quite a few meeting's in the 90's that he promoted.
He always delivered on his word, unlike many other promoters at that time.

Cheers,
Brian

It's always sad to hear about an Icon passing RIP Ivan.

Yes there is still speedway racing out here in Cali, they run the short track here though. Probably our most famous rider was Bruce Penhal, he is a So Cal guy. I used to go every week and watch him, Bast bros, Rick Woods and a bunch of others at Irwindale.

Sam Ermolenko, Bill Hamill, Greg Hancock, Kelly Moran.........It's a long list of top notch world class riders.
A shame they seem to have more recognition in Europe and down here than in their own country. :(
