Parked it here in 2006 and hasn't moved since
« on: April 19, 2018, 02:11:24 AM »
I'm sad to say that my poor old bike hasn't moved from this spot in 12 years ! Its lived under a mountain of sheets and blankets and has sat unloved all this time.
Going to try and fire it up in the next couple of weeks so I will change the oil, replace the fuel, plugs and empty the carb float bowls. And put teaspoon of oil into bores is there anything else I should do ?
Cheers

+!...great looking bike.  Guessing 12 years ago the fuel did not have ethanol, this will play into your favor.  Subscribed to see this bike on the road again!

Luckily with the clips dropping the float bowls on the carbs is very easy. Be curious as to how they look inside after 12 years if there was gas left in them. If the throttle still turns thats a good sign but not having an airbox taking them off if needed and getting the slow jets and float needles and other parts clean should be pretty hassle free.
Nice looking bike to be hiding away.

Well I pulled the tank off and emptied it,  the petrol after 12 years was pretty clean except it had turned a maple syrup colour. 1st photo.
The rubber seal in the fuel tap had dried out and was hard as nails so replaced that.
Drained the oil and tank and it was so black you couldn't see the sun through it, second picture .
Pulled the plugs and put a small amount of oil in each bore and thankfully it turns over smoothly.
Just waiting to get a new oil filter now before I fire the old girl up.
Cheers

id let the ignition points close on some alcohol soaked rag and wipe it through, better your chances of a solid fire up after so long?

Thanks Dave, I installed a Dyna electronic ignition about 20+ years ago as I was always having trouble with my points.  I don't remember a big crack in the coil but it was running when I parked it here so fingers crossed it works ok

Good thing too mate, she looks about 12! I wonder what made that coil crack, I've got 30 year old Dyna coils here and there's no cracking. Your Dyna ignition should work fine, regardless. My ZZR1100 has been off the road for 18 years, so I popped the carbs off to give them a clean.

They had fuel in them when it was parked, and while not disgusting, they were close. The mains were almost blocked and the primarys were all blocked, one of them so bad I had to drill it out. Take the carbs off and give them a good clean now mate, if not, you'll be doing it shortly when you've put it back together and it runs like sh1t. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Haha she was 21 ! With the mind of a 50 year old ...
Thanks Terry for the advice about the carbs, I did turn the fuel off when I parked it so would you think they still need a clean ? when I checked the float bowls just now they were bone dry except for a small oily spot the size of a pea in the corners.
Cheers

Yeah mate, turning the fuel off just stops any more flowing into the carbs, but the inch of fuel in each bowl has sat there for 12 years until it's evaporated, but probably clogged your jets in the process. ;D

If you are thinking, you run it till it sputters, then turn off.. or drain the bowls..
 I have a cracked Andrew's coil I used for a test coil..
If it works, silicone the crack.

Its Alive  !!! Have and had a few issues along the way though, first the fuel petcock bowl disentergrated so had to order a new tap then the fuel lines were all leaking so replaced them.
Now I have a two leaks in the carburetors, one where the fuel line go's in ( the rail ? ) and one from a float bowl gasket . So have just ordered a new kit for the carbs but not sure if that comes with the rubber for the first leak or if I need to do that separately.
It's the first time I have used 'start ya barstard' and it kicked over first go , I wish I knew about it years ago !
Anyway it's a good start for getting this old girl back on the road
Cheers
