ARD Magneto
« on: April 24, 2018, 10:23:27 AM »
I have an ARD arm housing that i'm missing the actual magneto for. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get a replacement ARD mag or is there another that would work? I have a few old FM-X style magnetos i'm wondering would work? The rotor shaft appears different than on the ARD and it looks like the housing would need machined down. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Jaguar is our resident guru on these but I believe they are a Fairbanks-Morse magneto that is fairly common and can be totally rebuilt. The unique part is the mount which you already have so you are better off than starting the other way around.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Yep, they're a Fairbanks Morse magneto commonly used on tractors about 60 or 70 years ago. FM made magneto's for lots of applications so make sure you buy a 4 cylinder one, and make sure the housing and shaft matches your arm. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The magneto housing itself if based off the standard FM units.
Basically the mounts are milled down.  IF you can do this work, just buy a $10 magneto on ebay and cut the mounts off.
There are a few variations of hole pattern and seal size, but it should be VERY obvious what you need

There are people selling NEW housings that require no work.
These are meant to replace Joe Hunt units from a Harley.  Should bolt up.

You are correct that he rotor is different in the ARD vs anything else.  This is due to how the belt pulley mounts.
The ARD uses a tapered shaft.  Again, if you are handy you can figure something out.  There is no real magic in these things.  It just needs to hold a pulley.
Can modify the OEM FM shaft too.

The good news is that service parts are EVERYWHERE and cheap (ish)

If you need part numbers I have a thread here and on CR.net.
