2013 harley. What would cause this?
« on: April 25, 2018, 11:10:56 AM »
This is my brothers bike. The battery is 2.5 years old and plugged into a trickle charger over the winter. This week we found the fuse to the trickle charger pig tail blown and this build up on the negative battery terminal. When o took the picture we had already removed a lot of the build up.

Any ideas?

Lead corrosion, usually from battery acid.

If the charger is a trickle charger (low amp, but constant charge), the battery may have been overcharged forcing the acid up through the terminal and causing the corrosion to build on the combination of lead terminal and copper wire connection. The battery may be OK after cleanng the corrosion, or it may have been damaged by being over charged.

I'm thinking that if the battery can't vent while charging it would also help  cause this. If it has removable caps, were they open/removed?

That's a good point. If the battery is still good and you use it keep an eye on it for future leakage.

I had a sort of similar in my battery for my 15.  Cooked a cell, though I had accidentally let the battery discharge cause initially didnt plug charger in.  The ones with auto sense shutoff best

Thanks for the replies.  I don't believe this battery is vented so I guess it's venting through the negative terminal.  We cleaned it all and it seems to take a charge for now.

Copper terminal (you can see it peeking through the corrosion). My wife's car does the same thing.
