Need Help Degreeing CX-1 Camshaft - Solved
« on: April 29, 2018, 10:50:11 AM »
Hey, I've been trying to degree-in a CX-1 camshaft from Cycle X for my 72' CB750K. Here's the numbers I've been getting and they don't seem to match up to the numbers posted on the CycleX website.

CX-1 Specs:

Measured with Zero Valve Lash
VALVE LIFT (INCH): 0.345
DURATION @ .0.050": 229°
LOBE CENTER: 99.5°

INTAKE OPENS     15°     BEFORE TDC
EXHAUST OPENS     34°     BEFORE BDC

INTAKE CLOSES     34°     AFTER BDC
EXHAUST CLOSES     15°     AFTER TDC

This is the numbers I keep coming up with from the #1 Intake;

At Zero Valve Lash and TDC found and zero'd on my degree wheel
Intake Opens: 16°
Intake Closes: 27°
Duration @ .0.050": 223°
Lobe Center: 95.5°
Valve Lift: ~.325"

I'm using a manufactured 18" degree wheel and have my dial gauge running parallel to the valve when taking measurements but I haven't been able to get a closer duration or valve lift numbers than what I posted above. Is this as close as I'm going to get or am I missing something? Let me know if more information is needed, this is my first time trying something like this.

What about Exhaust?
If they are same but opposite you might have the cam in an OK position. Like  IN:16/27, EX 27/16
When I time cam at 0 lash I tighten the adjuster screw until the indicator clock needle start to move just a little. This to overcome the play in the rocker arm.

After that You can check with the running lash to see the real thing. Possible to adjust again.

there's a great write-up of cam degreeing by dave barbier: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,140833.msg1890649.html#msg1890649

he does it on a 650 engine but the principle is the same. in a nutshell: you equal up the lobe centres at running lash.
forget about measuring the cam at zero lash, that's only if you have a scientific interest in how your copy of the cam matches the manufacturer's specs. the real thing is what you get at running lash.

My CX-1 numbers were all over the place and I ended up just finding a happy medium.

Look at Webcam's website, they have excellent instructions. My cam in my 72 is very similar to yours. My numbers did not match the card, but my cam is spot on. Like Pewe stated, the intake/exhaust numbers should mirror each other, then you can calculate your lobe centerline (explained on webcam's site) and it should be the same. With degreeing in this cam, that's all that really matters.

Thank you everyone for the great replies. Instead of trying to go off the cam card, I instead matched up the exhaust and intake numbers as close as possible:

My Numbers:

Intake: 10°/38°
Exhaust: 39°/10°
Duration: 228°
Lobe Center: 104°

..............which is exactly what Web Cam Inc calls out in their specs for their Webcam 41 (+/- .5°).

On CycleX's website, they state the CX-1 is equivalent to Webcam's 41. I wish I would have known that before spending way to much time trying to match the false numbers CycleX has posted on their website.

Oh well, I'm moving on. Thanks again my friends.

The WebCam numbers look more like what I was seeing. Not sure why the CX-1 published specs are so different.
