I think I have goldwing wheels just no brakes
« on: January 08, 2007, 06:10:41 PM »
Bought a rolling CB750 chopper frame, disc's front and rear but with no calipers. The only bike that I can find pictures of with the same wheels is a GL1000 year unknown. The wheels are a five spoke with a smooth finish, not a raised lip on the spokes. The previous owner bought the bike complete sometime in the early eighties and parked it after losing the timing chain. I got with it with out motor and brakes and doesn't remember what happened to either of them. Wasn't going to push the issue with with him being that he's in his early 70's and I didn't pay anything for it. Are there calipers that would work from something else? Any help would be greatful

Firstly, welcome to SOHC4 forum!

Now, a picture would be most helpful in figuring out what you've got there... from your description it seems like you are describing comstar wheels? If so, it could be possible you have any flavour of comstar that was fitted to many Honda's from around '77 onwards. Pic of the comstar on my '78 750F2 is attached... any similarity?

Thats a nice shiny wheel phil.

The 77 F's are the same as is the 78 goldwing.

Now...some are marked "tubeless" and some aint bear that in mind.

Thanks kghost - I try to keep the old girl in good nick!  ;D

Thought all the comstars were tubeless capable... you learn something new every day. Or do you mean that some comstars are just not marked as being tubeless capable??

Oddly enough some are not marked for tubeless.

The ones that are clearly say it.

Been a while since I remember looking at the side wall area of the rims. And never had a chance to compare the marked vs unmarked.

Maybe someone else can comment

That is Silver Comstar wheels. They were used on Gold Wings, CBX1000, CX500,CB750's, CM400, and the non US CB650Z. And they are tubeless on my CB650.

Although slightly off topic (not totally off though), what about the black Comstars? Any
input on them being tubeless or not? ???

Phil, thanks for the reply, mine have a larger slot in the spokes but other than that they are the same. 19" front 18"  rear. I'm guessing someone cross drilled the rotors as I have yet to come across another set like them. Only found one pic with the exact wheel and that was on a GL1000.  Thought it would be nice to build up the ole choppper frame so my CB400SS cafe won't feel so lonely. What I would like to know is what calipers I can use for this project.

Supersport 77 - 78 and goldwing  78's are the same.

I have a set of each.

CBX brakes will also work with a 5 mm bigger piston to boot.

Phil, thanks for the reply

You're welcome.  :)

What I would like to know is what calipers I can use for this project.

Yeah, what kghost said! Pity they (the original calipers) didn't come with the bike...

Bill - whilst I am not 100% sure, I would like to think all of them (comstars) are tubeless tyre capable. As kghost said they are clearly marked on the rim - the exact phrasing being: TUBELESS TIRE APPLICABLE - at least that is what mine say anyway...  ;D

        Hey Phil,

Thanks, I'll just have to take a look. I've got 2 sets of the black ones from a CB650 (1 set
is on a 650 in fact) and 3 (2 front and 1 rear) silver ones (1 set was on my 76' CB400F, when I got
       it).

Duh, maybe I'm thick but doesn't the Wing have a shaft drive rear?
Was going to post a couple of pics but I see max size is now 80 kb.
How do I reduce the 121 to 80, anyone?
I think I got it but dont know what the quality is going to be. Had to reduce DPI to 100 (from 300) and compression from 15 to 35.
Couldn't find a tube type Comstar so I had to use a spoke type

Okay, the wheels that I have are the comstar's and there was a version of them on the GL1000 or 1100. Obviously mine are of the chain drive version that I have found a pic here on a CB750 along with the forks that I have. So now I know where to start as for finding calipers so I can stop without Fred Flintstone'ing with my feet. Thanks for the help so far, ....
