When Transferring Frames, What Would You Upgrade/Replace
« on: May 01, 2018, 10:09:46 AM »
I'm transferring all the components of a '74 CB550 from one frame to another for titling and to paint rusted parts. What should I be looking to replace or upgrade that would improve the ride? One thing I'm considering is All Balls steering bearings, but is there anything else I should be looking at? Thanks.

You can replace the swing am bushings with brass one piece units. The stock shocks aren't very good, and the RaceTech cartridge emulators for the front forks will improve the front suspension.

Yup...although the racetech stuff is easy enough to add at anytime.  Certainly would want to do any grinding/welding/modification stuff done while its apart
If it works good, it looks good...

Banker - thanks the bushings I'll look into asap. The other 2 I can change at any time, just want to get it on the road first.

Sean - Only going to be cleaning and painting, but thanks for the advice.

Maybe powder coat on the battery box? I'd knock off any weld berries the factory left behind. Sounds like you're on it pretty good.

Any suggestions where to pick up the brass bushings?

Sorry to jump in here but i'm going through the exercise of replacing swing arm bushings and have purchased the same bronze bushings from ebay..

The description states the ID is 21.5mm diameter.

I've attached specs from the Honda manuals:

Note the limit for CB550's (well my particular one is) 21.5mm and from some 750K models is 21.455. Add this to a worn collar and you don't get a very good fit. The bushing and collars vary between different models and so it depends what you have even though these sellers list these bushings for lots of different models.

Just something to think about....take a few measurements and see what you will end up with
