Tight Rod Bearing. Would You Reuse Rod Nuts?
« on: May 02, 2018, 01:57:33 PM »
So I discovered a tight rod bearing after I closed the engine cases.  Of course I could not have found it before then.  Then spent the last two days debating back and forth with myself whether it would loosen up on start.  :o   Decided I could not risk it and opened the engine back up.  On disassembly the only finding was a shinny spot about 1.5mm on one bearing.  Had another bearing set on hand and that has resolved the issue.  Of course I have new rod bolts on hand, but no nuts.  I have not reuse rod bolts or nuts in the past.  Feeling like this is a no brainer, but would anyone reuse rod nuts in a race engine?

If they are the 410 nuts and have only been torqued once they should be fine.

I appreciate you voicing what I was thinking.  Probably not ideal, but doable.  The local Honda dealer say he can have new nuts by tomorrow, so going to wait.  If I had a race this weekend I'd have already put it back together.  Still puzzled why there was a tight spot.  Free as a bird 95% of the rotation.  The weight of the rod would cause it to fall, except for that one place.  Since different bearings cured the issue, logic says that was the problem.  Both sets measured the same by plastigage.  Top end is set to arrive soon.  Looking forward to getting the motor on the dyno and bike on the track.

It is certainly unusual but I have heard it happening here before. You did the right thing.

I think you'll like the 126-20, it's very similar to the Yosh race cam, plus it's easy on the valve train.

Martin will have a very nice package going into the season. ;)

Hoping to test/race the Honda at Gingerman and then make Road America too.  As a follow up to the tight rod bearing, seems it is not unknown for a rod to feel sticky in one spot.  If the bearing measures good clearance wise it is good to go.  Also OK to reuse the 13214-410-003 nuts (at least once if needed).  There, I feel better already.   ;D
