fellow CB500 owners... help!
« on: May 03, 2018, 10:47:38 PM »
Hi guys,
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me out of a bit of a conundrum. I'm at the tail end of rebuilding my '73 CB500 motor. I've misplaced a couple very specific little parts. They're components of the shift mechanism; one is a small spring, and the other a ball bearing. Part numbers 1 and 23 in the attached image from the service manual. The red arrow in the other photo indicates part number 15, the shift drum guide screw, under which should be  that spring, ball bearing, and collar. I have only the guide screw and collar. I don't think I'll be able to find the exact replacements, but they're simple enough parts that I'm sure I can find something close from McMaster, if I know what I'm looking for. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could provide me with the dimensions of that ball bearing and spring.
Thanks so much for your time,
Nick

Have you consulted the specific parts list for your model which means comparing your engine- and framenumbers with those listed in the first few pages of every parts list? IIRC those parts underwent modification!
All CB500 part lists are here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500

Delta is correct - from the 1972 (K1) model on Honda did not use the spring and ball bearing so the parts you have are correct and all you need.
The CB500 parts manual on this site shows this change.

wow, thanks so much guys. I thought I was losing my mind, as I have no recollection of ever seeing those parts when I disassembled the transmission

try and see how sloppy the collar might be in the shift drum groove, and also on the bolts spigot, once these wear and get too sloppy the drum can move sideways and cause shift problems, yours look ok from here.
