1971 CB750 Starter Motor Removal.
« on: January 24, 2010, 11:43:06 AM »
Hi Guys,
What's the quickest/easiest way to replace the starter motor on a 1971 CB750, with the engine still in the frame.  Does it just lift out, or do you need to remove the left hand crankcase casing to get at the reduction gears?
Any advice much appreciated.
Regards,
Keith.

I see this is your 1st post Keith...Welcome to the board...we like pics too.
You will need to only take off the cover over the starter. You do not need to do anything with the stator cover. Once you loosen the starter bolts you have to push or tap the starter toward the other side of the bike to get it out. Some people put a long screw into the hole that held the cover and use that to pull it out. There is a nice tutorial in the FAQ area too. Good luck with it.

What John said mate, just make sure you disconnect the battery first. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The cam chain tensioner has to be removed first. I rotate the crank to the 15* point before removing it.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Looked for the link and was not able to locate it. Do you have the Hondaman book? He is a member here and the book is well worth it. It will have all your answers. Just contact him in the members section on the top.

Andy bumped it to the top for some reason? It's not that big of a job.. Remove the tensioner, remove the starter cover, remove the two screws that hold the starter to the case, and slide the motor to the right and lift it out. ;) Oh, I almost forgot you have to remove the shifter cover so the starter cable is freed from it's hiding place. I've got a cut-down CR style cover, so it's not hidden. ::)
