My project GSX-R 1100 -87

I've wanted one since I was 9. Read an article about the bike back then and I was sold.
This particular one was supposed to be a turbobike but the project ended at some point and the bike was sold without the engine to a friend of mine who used it as a sparebike for his -87 in mint condition. Parts bike was left outside for a couple of years and to anyone who knows anything about Finnish weather will understand it doesn't do any bike any good.
I saved her. No front end, no engine, but repairable fairings, repairable chassis, and best of all, still registered.
Not gonna do a restoration but a daily rider with later suspension and 17" wheels.

Someone cut a part of the subframe to make room for the turbo.

I have a titled, low mileage 86 GSXR750 frame and body pieces. Multiple engines and tons of engine parts. No time to build.

I decided to make motorcycles fun for myself again and if they aren't... well, I can just build them and sell them out.
Hopefully I still find the passion for them now that I can work on my own bikes and on my own schedules  ;)

I had an 87. It was all original except the pipe , Mikunis and Kosman wheels. I loved tat bike. Bike got stolen in Daytona at Bike Week.

I surely do miss my 87. Won a few races with it and she  was a blast to ride.

The fairings are original but at 33 years of age combined with the bike being stored outside for several years, they are in pretty bad shape. I could repair them but then again was thinking of replacing them with fibreglass parts, maybe even a nice racing spirited solo seat, gonna do some track days on this old girl anyhow.

Found a few more issues from the chassis and swingarm and my friend welded a few things again.
Front engine mounts were also missing but I found a pair from Npm.fi, they had this stuff in stock still!

I'm expecting to have a complete front end (minus brakes) by weekend. Decided to go with stock forks using new internals.

You are collecting some nice parts for your bike. Every GSX-R we ever looked at was completely thrashed and beyond our skills, we're just a couple of old guys having fun. The guys riding GSX-R's back in the late 80's rode them pretty hard and totalled a whole bunch of them. Like dragracer many of them got stolen too. I'm looking forward to seeing your bike done, it's rare to see one on the road. Are you going to ride it on the street again or just track days?

 I've never ridden one of those but we did get another GS 1100E. 8)
It's the first one we resurrected for a buddy a few years ago and the reason we bought the 80' GS 1100E. We got it for what he owed us, he couldn't spend more money on it and lost his indoor parking.
It's a black 81' and now has 16,680 miles. It had the petcock fail and dumped gas into the crankcase. So far we've fixed the petcock, changed the oil, cleaned it up and test rode it 4 miles. It is leaking oil from the head gasket at the leading edge of the cam chain tunnel but still runs great. I'll clean it up again and run it on the centerstand to check for any other leaks before we pull off the cylinder head.
Even though it runs great the stock exhaust is failing now and I have to get a Delkevik for it but I'm really tempted to get a set of RS36 carbs too. We put the same combination on the 80' GS 1100E and it works great. 8)

About the oil leak... sounds like the usual front middle cylinder head nuts O-ring leak. Replace them before pulling the head.
It looks like the head gasket is leaking but I have never ever seen a head gasket leak from there, plenty of o-ring problems though.
Use Viton to replace the, I'm sure, leaky, old and hard stock ones.
