Cb750 oil line options
« on: May 09, 2018, 02:16:23 PM »
I'm starting to build a cafe 750 from a '77F bike and am currently making a mock up of an oil tank that has a different shape to the stock tank. Does anyone make oil line adapters or oil lines to run from  the engine to the oil tank that use conventional fittings?
Back along the way I had a '71 with a Dunstall tank and seat with clip-ons etc. and a '74 Rickman Honda and since many Norton, Triumph and Ducatis. Now at 3 score and ten back to a Honda.

Congratulations from a contemporary. I think the smell of solvents, oil, gasoline and rubber in my shop with my SOHCs is the elixir of youth.

I enjoy those things as well but I wear gloves now. A bout of the big C is somewhat sobering so I take many more precautions than in my invincible youth!

This is a great option here.

I used the stock fittings and had -10an line crimped on.

A guy here was making custom SS oil lines.  I made my own using original fittings, not that hard since those hoses have literally 0 psi pressure.

I saw a post where a member had fabricated an aluminum plate that bolted on in place of the stock fittings and covered both oil ports in the engine. It was tapped for AN fittings, which were threaded in and protruded on one side like the stock fittings, and had O-rings over the protrusions. Then you just use (-10?) braided hose to connect.

That seems to be more doable at home than those posted by slikwilli420.  I checked them out and would not try to mill them out without CNC.

I have an empty 70 engine case hanging in my shop, will look at those oil ports tonight, kinda like the idea.

Any shop with a crimp machine that makes hoses will do it. I cleaned up the original fittings, slipped a crimp ferrule on, then the -10AN line, and then had them crimped. Charged me about $7 per crimp. Works great, cheap and lasts a lifetime. Making a plat for the holes could be done, but at that point, why not just use the fittings I linked from eBay? They look well made and I was going to use them but they only have up to -8 and I run -10 line since it mates up best with the stock fittings anyway.

Because that's how I roll/build my bikes.   ;D

Thanks for the ideas and sources. I have options and will proceed with the tank design and the longer hoses.

Hey Prokop!! I also made my own using the original fitting at the engine end (aluminum, and hard to improve on), with an aluminum hose barb at the oil tank end to replace the stock steel part. I used some oil compatible hose with narrow hose clamps. The crimped on ferrules are much heavier than the clamps, and like you say there is zero pressure. There is no need for heavy braided stainless lines or expensive AN fittings.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I used SS hoses for the looks - they are rated some hundreds of psi   ;D
