Fixing tank pinholes
« on: May 17, 2018, 06:05:26 PM »
I was stripping paint from my tank today and in the process found some small pinhole leaks that the previous owner had covered with jb weld. My plan is to get some red kote and use it to seal the inside of the tank. What does everyone use as a degreaser before the red kote inside of the tank? Also any input/experience/suggestions with tank sealers is a great help!

Thanks

POR-15 or Caswell are more recommended than RedKote.

I've used Redkote without problems, as well as POR-15. Redkote is a two-step process, POR-15 is three steps. For Redkote, you can rinse your tank with acetone. You can also thin Redkote with acetone, and it means that unlike POR-15 you don't need a completely dry tank before you pour in the liner..

After reading up on different posts about rust removal i decided to use vinegar. All i can say is WOW. had a fair amount of rust and i topped up the tank ( important , no air gap ) and shook it every day for about 2 weeks  ( longer is better ) .The results were amazing , like new metal ! Neutralized the vinegar with water and baking soda then rinsed and then douched it out with hot soapy water and then filled it half way with fuel, MMO and a little 2 stroke oil  ( then sloshed it around ) to prevent flash rusting . New petcock and done.

If you are coating , i would rinse it after the hot soapy stage with Toluol or MEK and dry and coat right after drying . Good luck !

I use caswell epoxy sealer. I mix a little up and seal the pinholes on the outside before sealing the inside, or if more derusting is needed.

Have the holes soldered before you coat the inside. Ask me how I know?
