Use a site like gearing commander and play with ratios until you get something in 5th gear at that speed more in the 4-5k range. I have extra sprockets but I race, so care not about high RPM for extended periods.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I think its lost on him, I gave him gear calculator in the first comment, but he prefers to be offended.

That's the point. I'm not lugging it. I'm Doing 70mph not km/h. Yes you're right, It does come alive beyond 6K....funnily enough I have been there! What i was getting at, is that for prolonged highway use, it does become a chore at 6,000-7,000 rpm. Hence the question only for those that actually own a 750.....who has played about with sprockets?
You are lugging it, at 70 mph you make only about 4500 rpm, still well below where the power comes in at some 6k revs, and than complain you are overtaken by bikes doing 80 at 4k revs!
Open that throttle, you say it has oodles of power so use it, it should be able to do 130 mph at least!

standard gearing on 500/550 gives 5000 rpm @ 100kph,i like it like that, its a screaming pain on a long boring highway run but its in the power band, they lack torque at say 3500/4000.

If you want to keep up to other guys...
I run 17 and 54.. let it rev... it has an extra 2500 rpm, and I use it.
Then if you have a roadtrip put a 19 on the front.....gives you about the same as 17/48.

Gearing is the cheapest thing you can do to make your bike quicker.

750's (and yes, 836's too) are basically the same, but the small difference is proportional.  No sohc4's have low end torque in abundance, but the more cc's you have, the better it is.  Guzzi's, BMW's, Harley's, Ducati's and big parallel twins have more power down low but don't have a comparable red line.

So don't fight the power of rpm's.  If your engine is built correctly, rpms won't hurt a thing.  So use 'em as intended and enjoy it.
If it works good, it looks good...

I've been running 42-18 for years. I thought it would be kinda lugging around town but it really isn't that bad. I wanted to be able to cruise on the highway instead of screaming when I'm up over 70 mph. I haven't ridden mine in a few years so I don't recall the exact rpm's at 70 but I like it that way.

the short stroke gives less piston speed but the sustained rpm is annoying if you aint cornering and changing gears over and over, thats where these bikes shine, dont forget these were from the late 60s formula more or less and were aimed flat out at English piles of #$%* when new,ive got a mate with an immaculate Norton 850 commando kick only, its a beautifull bike and i out drag him so easily of the line with his wide ratio 4 speed,70 mph hes there and marches past at low chug chug rpm down the highway.

I liked 18/48 on my favorite cb750 but that was a super sport, I think the top gear is different.

I love the acceleration with my 17/48 gearing (836cc) but find the highway runs are relatively high RPM...maybe it's my straight flow exhaust drone 8)

one trick for the nortons to have lower highway rpm,was to replace the 19t with a 21 tooth front sprocket, the rear is part of the braked rum,80mph all day.

I have had same ideas...an open exhaust can be rather much. Difference is only 250rpm at 60mph/100kph. A too open exhaust is tricky to jet for low rpms.
