Clutch issues

Ok guys while I wait for parts for my electrical system I thought I would tackle the clutch. When I ride it’s all over the place. When adjusted well it engages too early and then when I ride in this condition it seems to slip, I can’t get it to fully lock up.

So I tore into it today and thought for sure I’d find a smoking gun but not so sure I did. Need some assistance.

Disc all look good, plates are a little brown at the bottom but no issues. Plates were not in the same direction, one small thing and I don’t have spring seat washers in the system, according to diagram I should.

Only other issue is the springs are to spec but not all the same size, only two are exactly spot on to a tenth.

Anybody see anything obvious that would cause this? I’ve been messing with my clutch for 8 months and it never really worked at its best.

You’ve an early style clutch there. I don’t see anything obviously wrong. Plates are approaching 50 years old. I would replace frictions & clutch springs. See how it goes after that.

You’ve an early style clutch there. I don’t see anything obviously wrong. Plates are approaching 50 years old. I would replace frictions & clutch springs. See how it goes after that.


Thanks disco. Just purchased the whole setup from cycle x. Had the same thoughts and decided it would be worth the price to see if age is the concern.

Any idea if the spring seats are a concern? I can’t seem to find them anywhere to purchase

3rd pic it looks like you have some small burrs on the hub, from the plates. You might want to use a flat file to smooth those off.

Ok one last question

Item #3 outer ring. Didn’t have that in there, should I have?

So far missing spring seats ( ordered ) and now that I look at it the outter ring...

Vintage bikes are good fun aren’t they?  ;)

When you re-assemble make you get the orientation of clutch hub (No 2) & pressure plate (No 7) correct or you’ll be also snapping the ‘ears’ off the clutch lifter. Of the 4 theorical possible positions, only 2 will actually allow the clutch hub & pressure plate to engage each other properly. Have a play around with the hub & pressure plate and you’ll soon work it out. Permanently mark the orientation with a centre punch or similar.
