World’s fastest CB750
« on: May 18, 2018, 09:08:16 AM »
Hi all,

We are looking to try to beat the record of the world’s fastest cb750 to celebrate the 50 years anniversary of the cb750.

We are looking go set the record within a criteria, there are many super highly modified bikes out there and if we go down that path there would be no limit (sort of) to what we could do to go fast.

The idea is to look stock and be as stock as possible inside and out. Some mods will be needed to unlock its full potential but we want to limit. But we will set a criteria.

-What are the known speed records for the cb750?
-Who holds the record or records?
-Where were they set?
-What was the criteria and how modified the bike was?

I have asked these questions in other forums and wasn’t able to get any solid info on what has been achieved so far. I guess these bikes are so much modified that there are all sorts of results out there.

Note that although I am happy to hear about drag records and speeds, I am interested in land speed records.

Thanks in advance

I think that the S.C.T.A. (Southern California Timing Association) can probably answer some of your records questions especially about El Mirage and Bonneville records.

Talk to Old Scrambler about his 2 Bonneville class records or better yet come out during the trials 8/24 - 8/30.

Talk to Bill Benton and Frank Loney about their drag racing records. They can also give you info about other 8 second 750s.

Then there's the late Russ Collins and his HIGHLY modified "750s".

Depends on your "criteria" I'd say.

If you can't do 125 at sea level on a GPS  you are wasting 500 bux entry money at Bonneville..

I'm very proud of myself that I even knew where to look for this article after 36 years ;) , it must have impressed me at the time!
It is a "slightly modified" bike, but the numbers are quite awesome IMO.

There is no simple answer. Speed records have so many classes... which applies? The "fastest 750" would probably have had a fairing that hides most everything recognizable, or even been an enclosed streamliner. The SCTA and FIM have their records online. There are other bodies that do speed records but I think the FIM is the authority.

Fun information for us CB750 guys and those that plan to use a turbo.
A small detail.... article mention 64 mm stroke, should be 63 mm which give 998 cc with 71.0 mm pistons

There was a pretty stock one raced at BONNEVILE,  3 yrs ago did not hit high speed.
He came back 2 yrs ago and did much better, can't recall the speed. It should be in Old Scramblers B,Ville thread.
Both those guys ran that year and set some records.
I think they took last year off.   Then a Triumph took back Old Scramblers record.
He now lives here in town,
Old Scrambler is returning this year to defend his record . Some of us forum guys are going to cheer him on.
If you want to do this, attend, wether bike is ready or not, you can learn..
Late  August. .. should be at least Old Scrambler, the Pharmacist, myself, and I hope more of us..

Frank, that was Mr Honda (real last name) from Japan on an ALMOST stock 750. I supervised the tear down since they weren't sure how to disassemble with their builder back home. 749cc with stock 392 head and a Yamiya Yosh Daytona cam. Nothing fancy. 125 and change. He brought it back as a 1000 and did ~ 130.

For the right price I'd be willing to ride my CB750 out of a cargo plane at high altitude to set the "fastest CB750" record. Vertical speed counts right?

A bit out of the category of what you were likely looking for...but here it is.

Though is was considered a failure, it hit 305 mph. Twin cb750 engines, turbocharged.

Is Bill Benton located in Texas and is he the guy that sells parts on Facebook groups?

I am in Australia so going there for the trials isn’t that easy.

The criteria is to be as close to stock as possible. When we start modifying there is no limit to what it can be and the bike ends up very different to what it used to be.

Bodi, you make a good point. Putting a fairing to remove drag is less of a modification than completely different engine internals. I will look into this.

Excuse my ignorance but what’s SCTA and FIM?
