Switching relays please read
« on: May 19, 2018, 02:03:21 PM »
1973 Honda CB350F So I had this genius idea. I want my turn signals to be running lights as well as indicators. So what if I switched out the stock relay (normally open) with a new relay (normally closed) the lights would stay on all the time and when the signal voltage is applied to the new relay (normally closed) it will open and in turn make the indicators blink. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

If I am correct, the runs off a timing relay, not a basic relay. You would either need to find a blinker relay that is NC or you would need to add a relay and modify the wiring a bit for it to work.

You would want to take the POS in from the timing relay, splice it, and connect it to the common on NC connection opposite the common. The common would then run to the blinkers. The output from the timing relay would run to the POS leg of the relay coil.

I am doing this in my head, so I may be off a bit, feel free to correct.

I will take pictures and post on this thread directly from the book. I know it’s doable I’m just trying to go about it the cleanest way

Just use the coils in place of the present lamps, and tie the lamps to the relay contacts with Brn/Wht supplying the power for the lights thru the contacts. I used to do this with the rear brake and turn lamps back there, changing the lenses to red to make more rear brake lights show up.

Running lights are usually not as bright as turn signals.  Bright running lights might cause your battery to drain since the CB350 charging system is not real keen on heavy electrical load.
