Pinesol carb soak and gaskets
« on: May 17, 2018, 07:59:26 PM »
Yes I did do a Search and got this "Unable to access the search daemon" so here's my questions. I've read a lot about the good results using Pinesol as a carb cleaner. A good soak in it does wonders however I am wondering what it may do to the rubber bits such as the gasket under the carb tops. I am cleaning a set of carbs off my CB750K1 because I didn't use a proper gas stabilizer - my bad. Any experiences with it to pass along? Thanks, Cliff.

do a google search and use the string
site:forums.sohc4.net
That will return hits to your search word or words on the sohc4 forums hits you seek and probably a few you didn't or don't want...

link above was the search I performed with Pine-sol in the search with the sohc4 forums...
May need to try spelling variations...

Do the 750 carbs have felt seals that are oiled on any of the shafts beneath a washer?

Personally I prefer the Home Depot purple Simple Green, industrial version.

I've used ordinary Simple Green which turned the carb bodies dark in colour and "ate" at the metal. Not doing that again. Thanks for the link. Cliff.

I forgot about all my posts about Pinesol. I haven't torn the carbs apart for a long time. Getting old I guess. Thanks David for posting that.

PineSol is acidic, and will eat away at the carbs.  Use a proper carb dip.

If you soak in Simple Green for an hour or two there should be no issues.

The purple industrial Simple Green sold at Home Depot is aluminum safe IF your concentration is 50% or less.  But, all cleaners must be thoroughly flushed out of the carb...carb cleaners that are made with aromatic hydrocarbons like acetone, ketones, and other nasty odorous chemicals do it through evaporation. Compressed air blown through the passages helps clear the passages after the good rinsing with water in the case of simple green. I use it in cobination with about an hour in the ultrasonic by harbor freight if the carbs are new to me.  Using it and changing the purple simple green until it is not changing color.
It is amazing how dirty scrubbed and carb clean sprayed carbs are from the dirt that is ultrasonically cleaned can be.  Set of carbs from a CX500 were brass brushed and carb cleaner sprayed and scrubbed in throat and everywhere I could reach with the brush after disassembly and they turned the water black  3 times before they finally started to quit releasing dirt.  It was crazy to witness. This was the HF larger unit.

If you can find one inexpensively or can afford an industrial ultrasonic machine, do so...the Harbor Freight works but I would do the 2 yr warranty and exchange it for a new one before the warranty was up. The HF units have small tranducers, unlike an industrial machine's large tranducers and multiple ones to provide very good coverage in the tank.  You can save the solution that does not turn black and pour it off into a container to decant the solution after the dirt has come out of suspension for initial cycle of a very dirty part that does not have fine passages like a carb.

Regular Simple Green is rather corrosive and was used alot by the USAF until they began seeing problems in composites delaminating and even titanium and aluminum and other metals where it was wicking its way into joints and resisting rinses.  It was banned from being on base then.

I have a smaller ultrasonic cleaner that will do 1 carb body at a time. It works quite well. Thanks for all the replies guys. Cliff.

Sierra Carbon Free or EvinrudeTop Engine Cleaner is what I use to clean carbs. It melts all the crap away (overnight is best) and will not harm rubber or the carbs themselves.

I just kerosene scrub filthy carbs first, then a dishsoap soak/scrub,then a pressure blast out followed by air blast and carb cleaner,no one cleans carbs as good as your self, heres a set I bought as spares I was told came of a good running bike, yeah right!i always open carbs up if they are off the bike anyway, ive never used an ultrasonic cleaner nor ever will, the cheap ones are jewellery cleaners you cant expect them to do to the hard yards for you inside invisible areas of an old carb.
